To My College Best Friend

Just a few girls trying to transition into adults.

Dear College Best Friend,

Remember when we were freshmen in speech class, and we sat next to each other because we looked the least intimidating? I guess you could say we were friends, but we didn’t really know what to say to one another. We just made awkward smiles at each other when we saw one another walk into class, around campus, or in the cafe.

After a few weeks, we knew each other well enough to detect one another's sense of humor. It must have been a grand design that we both had very dry sarcasm. We spent the rest of the semester whispering snarky comments about our classmates’ speeches.

Before I knew it, we were basically sisters. Sharing clothes, dorm sleepovers, and constant late night McDonald's dates became part of our everyday schedules. The best part about becoming friends with you was not being judged by the amount of french fries I could fit in my mouth at once.

We were both the type of girls who never really got along with other girls, so we’ve had our fair share of laughing at the females who get up early to fix their hair and makeup, waste their days with boys, and insist on getting drunk at least three times a week. Thank God we are both levelheaded women who know what they are doing.

It wasn’t long until we were conquering some of our very first adventures together. Since there isn’t much to do in our college town, those adventures usually consisted of road trips out to the local lake, the college baseball field, and occasionally a dance club in the city. They may have not been the college dream outings, but we sure did paint the town.

We've always been there for each other when the college struggles caught up with us. Whether it was idiotic boy problems, studying for a final that felt like life or death, or not having enough money to pick up our own late night ice cream tab, we have been right by each other for it all. Even though neither of us are good at comforting.

We sure have had one heck of a freshman year. It was a year full of unforgettable memories. What I have learned most from college is that lots of friends will come and go, but you will always have that special friend that always stays. Sophomore year is quickly approaching, and I can’t wait to see the trouble we get ourselves into this year! Thanks for being my college best friend.

Sincerely,

The Girl with the Speech about Delta Airlines

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
