Oh, high school me.... We're told that high school is the best years of our life but I must beg to disagree. I think many of us prefer our college-adult-me; at least, I know I do. College is definitely better than high school in my humble opinion for a multitude of reasons.
Now, I will say, I did like one aspect of my time in high school. I loved most of my high school teachers, and truly appreciate the job that they do, I fact I even considered becoming one. I felt like I was lucky with the quality of teaching I received in high school, from freshman year to the time I graduated. However, I think college, especially in smaller classes, give us college students the opportunity to form closer relationships with professors than I was able to do with my high school teachers. It's nice to be able to feel like your professor truly believes in your capabilities as a student, and most are more than willing to work with you on anything you need.
Now, 'college me' is also vastly different from 'high school me.' High school me was much more naive and close minded than current college me. Since there wasn't much diversity in the mind-sets and types of people in high school, I don't feel like I really was capable of fully developing my own unique values and ideas. Being in a high school of like-minded people allows for some growth in personality but not nearly as much as college. Now that I've been in college for several months, I have genuinely seen diversity. I see people everyday from all over the world, with stories, troubles, ideas, backgrounds, and they are all so unique.
In college people allow each other to be themselves and you get to see who everyone really is, and that's way cooler than high school. College me is exposed to all sorts of people, situations, and opportunities. And because of that I am free to develop myself as an adult with my own truly unique sets of ideals, desires, values, and dreams. College puts fewer limits on students than high school does, which is why I think college will be the actual best years of my life.
I also think the way college is set up is better than high school. Granted there's a reason high school is different than college, I just like college more. In high school, you sit in classes for six to eight hours, and you don't have much of a break anywhere in between to relax or get other things done. In college, you have a massive range of classes, majors, and minors to choose from; and probably a maximum of five hours of straight classwork without a pause. Most of my friends have at least or two big breaks during the class day, and sometimes you might only have one class for an entire day. This is nice, because it gives you time to get ahead on course work and catch up with friends.
'College me' and college in general is simply different than high school. For that I am grateful, and I truly believe that college allows us all to really figure out who we are and what we want. Which is not always something high school allows you to do.
