There are many temptations in college. For most of the students coming here, it is the first time being away from their family. This is supposed to be one of the best times of everyone's lives and so they can go out and get an education and then eventually a job. The average college student gets distracted from a variety of things and can be one of the reasons to get kicked out of the university.
Being away from home for the first time, the student wants to let loose, but they don't know how to balance school and partying. There are many different distractions like girls/guys, partying, staying out late and even going on road trips with friends. School is the reason why we are all here at SVSU, because we are trying to get an education. The temptations of trying to get homework done when there is someone telling you to go workout or go party or something happens on the daily here and I get tempted quite a lot. School comes first and it took me four years to find that out. Temptations are a huge part of college because it prepares you for the real world. In the real world, your parents aren't there to look over your shoulder and make sure that you are doing your work. You have to be dependent upon yourself and college prepares you for that.
One of the best parts about being in Greek life is having a GPA requirement. This makes sure that you are not just partying and you are focusing on your grades as well. Being able to be involved on campus and keeping a good GPA is key to your college career. Being in TKE makes sure that I don't flunk out, but I still have fun doing what I'm doing. Being involved in multiple RSO's keeps me busy enough so I don't mess around too much. You don't want to put too much on your plate because you will not have enough time to focus on your studies. You want to have a perfect balance of involvement and studies. The phrase "C's gets degree's" is a real idea that you just do enough to get by and get your diploma. People do follow this, but once you get out into the real world and go for an interview, they will see that you did not try as hard as you should've.
College is supposed to be the best time of your life, but you have to figure out how you can balance the partying with the schoolwork. College is the time for you to grow up and become an adult and be responsible. I have been in college for three years and have fallen into temptation many times, but I have learned to manage my time and still be able to do the things that I really want to do.
