College Snow Days

"The days are getting colder, have a warm heart".

College Snow Days

Snow days growing up used to be a given when it snowed a lot, but as you get older it is less and less of a given because we are given responsibilities like going to work. For most kids attending college, snow days are a rarity, and even when they are given the schools usually just cancel for part of the day. Often they are not given because almost all students live on campus so the only people who have to worry about making it to the school is the faculty and staff. Professors can then make the decision on their own whether or not they want to call off class or not.

Campus was dead and the conditions were so bad that it was almost impossible to see across the street to see any of the other buildings on campus. So when you wake up on a Monday morning to the NY-alert system calling, emailing, and texting you telling you that "classes are cancelled due to hazardous conditions" it is like a Christmas morning miracle. Especially when it occurs on the Monday before Thanksgiving break and the only day classes are this week now is Tuesday.

But what do we do on a Monday morning with an unexpected snow day that was given to us miraculously? I can tell you one thing, nobody sleeps in like they normally plan to do, but no one leaves their dorm room either. In my head I believed that nothing was really going to happen and I was just going to spend the day in my bedroom cuddled under blankets. Little did I know it would be as fun as it turned out to be.

It started at 8:30 with a trip down the hill to a dining hall we never went to for breakfast, ever, but I guess when the snow falls it causes everyone to do things they haven't done before. I met up with some friends as they left the dining hall and they had the best plan of spending the day in their suite, drinking hot chocolate and play board games. What else would you want to do on a blistery, cold day in November? So a few hours later we ended up in a dorm room suite with twelve other people enjoying some hot chocolate and games.

The day could have honestly gone a million different ways. In college you try to balance classes, homework, having a job, working out in the gym and having a social life can be extremely difficult. Today we were all given the option to get school work done or catch up on our social life. The twelve us chose to catch up on our social life and it was a great decision. There is only so much time that we have to live and remember everything that occurred, but these will be the days that stay with us forever.

So, when you are given a college snow day use it as a way to create memories because the memories will be the most important when you leave college for the real world.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
