Back-To-School shopping is tough when you're on a budget and you don't have a ton of space in your dorm closet that's probably smaller than a shoe box. Luckily, it can be done without spending a ton of money. Here's everything you need fashion-wise before you start your fall semester - and where to find it.
1. Backpack
Sure, tote bags are cute if you want to sacrifice one of your shoulders. Carrying a laptop and textbooks is much easier with a cute backpack. Just make sure that it's big enough to hold your laptop before you buy. Especially if you're just starting college, make sure you get a sturdy one that will last you all four years - this is one thing that you will want to splurge on. Adidas and The North Face are great options, and Herschel (pictured above) is great as well if your style is a bit more edgy.
2. Enamel pins
This is for all of you who still have a perfectly good backpack but want something that looks a little different than what they already have. Etsy has a ton of enamel pins made by different artists, like this one by LittlePaisleyDesigns. You can add one (or multiple) to your backpack to make it more unique to you. Most pins go for about $10. Boom. Instant style update.
3. Flannel
I know it's not the 1990s anymore, but trust me - once you start wearing a flannel over your typical oversized t-shirt when it gets chilly out on the way to class, you'll thank me. And the best part? You don't have to spend more than $5. There are always cute and comfy flannels at your local thrift store. Urban Outfitters may have some cute ones, but you'd be stupid to spend $50 on something you could thrift this easily.
4. Insulated water bottle
I know this isn't a fashion necessity, but you don't want to get parched in the middle of class. Good thing there are plenty of trendy water bottles. Opt for an insulated one that will keep your water cold for up to 24 hours or your coffee hot for up to 12. Amazon has plenty great inexpensive ones, like the MIRA one above.
5. Baseball cap
Literally wore mine to class almost every day last year. It's perfect for any day - especially the ones where you've just rolled out of bed with third-day hair. Baseball caps (also called "dad caps") are in style right now, so you can find them anywhere. It won't be hard to find one that perfectly suits your style.
6. Sneakers
Good walking shoes are an absolute must-have. Nike, Puma, and Adidas (pictured above) are all known for selling comfortable walking shoes that don't look like you should keep them in the gym. It's super easy to find them on sale. Shoe Carnival almost always has a BOGO 50% off sale, and outlet stores have nearly everything marked down. I got the shoes above at an Adidas outlet for only $28.
7. Sweatshirt
Here's another thing you can find at your local thrift store. Dressing in layers at college is helpful, especially when it's chilly outside but you have that one classroom that's never below 80 degrees. Oversized sweatshirts are perfect for casual layering. Before you look at a thrift store, try asking your parents if they have any old sweatshirts from the 1980s-90s that they don't wear anymore and need to get rid of. I wore my dad's old sweatshirts all the time last winter and I always had people asking me where I got them.
8. Choker
The 1990s are definitely making a comeback. Simple chokers can make a comfy t-shirt or sweater look more trendy. You can find basic ones almost anywhere, usually for under $5. Just don't go too crazy.
9. Basic tees
Get one white, one black, one in your favorite color, and one with stripes and you'll probably have more than a dozen different outfits. Places like Forever 21, Old Navy or Target have great basics for under $10.
10. Denim jacket
If you want to try to look a bit more presentable without sacrificing comfort, denim jackets are perfect. Try pairing one with a solid shirt and black jeans. They're possible to thrift, but it may take a bit more work. Still worth it though.
