College may sound stressful, exciting, overwhelming, amazing and scary all at once- but that will be over after a few weeks. When you go to college, you start from a blank slate and have the freedom to become more independent and nothing will hold you back. You will learn from mistakes, but that shouldn't stop you from trying anything new. We all want to make memories that will last a lifetime, so make your college years something to remember. Here are 10 things you must do while still in college:

1. Study for all your classes.

This one is obvious. If you want to get a degree, you have to put some effort. The effort you give will reflect what grades you receive.

2. Meet new people.

New connections make you grow and open your mind to new ideas. Don't stay in your dorm the first weeks of class. Go out, socialize, make friends, join some clubs, and have fun.

3. Don't forget about your loved ones back home.

Being independent doesn't mean forgetting about your parents, family, and high school friends. Don't lose connections with the people you love. Find time to talk to them during your day or at least once a week via Skype.

4. Save your money.

Independence goes hand in hand with responsibility. At first, managing your own money can be hard, and the temptation to spend it all will be there.

5. Travel when you can.

Traveling is an enriching experience where you learn a lot about yourself and other places. If you have the funds, grab a group of friends (and potentially split the costs), explore, and make your friendship stronger.

6. Treat yourself every now and then.

Take a few hours off from your chaotic school schedule and find some time for yourself. Get your nails done, go out for a walk, dine at a good place, take a nap, and literally anything else that makes you take a break is necessary to be emotionally stable.

7. Try out all the food.

Food is an essential part of your life. If you have a meal plan, make the best out of it- seriously, don't let any of your money go to waste. Remember to eat healthy, but it's okay to have a cheat day every now and then.

8. Play sports.

This is a huge must, especially with the freshman 15 just around the corner. Join an intramural sport, or if you're a pro, join a varsity team. By playing sports, you'll meet new people and find out if you have a hidden talent or passion. Also, your body and your mind will thank you.

9. Learn more about your university.

Wherever you're going, you need to have some school spirit. Research your school's history and you'll end up loving it. Although your college might've not been your first choice, but it's definitely where you are supposed to be- and as time goes on, you'll see that.

10. Be yourself and have fun.

By being your genuine self, you will make the best out of every opportunity. Just have fun and enjoy every moment of your college career. Four years will fly by, and you don't want to live with any regrets.

"Life is the most exciting opportunity we have. But we have one shot. You graduate from college once, and that's it. You're going out of that nest. And you have to find that courage that's deep, deep, deep in there. Every step of the way." - Andrew Shue

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.
