Going Through Campus Life Withdrawals As Told By A Recent GCU Graduate

FOMO is real when you become a college graduate

I graduated from Grand Canyon University in December 2017 and I've experienced something that all grads can understand. It's campus life withdrawals and you don't expect it hit you until it hits you HARD.

You could be scrolling through your Facebook or Instagram feed and see all the Welcome Week posts from friends still on campus or posts from the many GCU affiliated accounts you happen to follow. You might even get a notification from Facebook Memories of moving into the dorms or apartments yourself just a year ago, two years ago, or maybe even three years ago.

Then, there's a growing feeling of FOMO (fear of missing out) when you realize that campus life lives on when you're not on campus.

The reminiscing goes on and the withdrawals start to show. You start to wear ALL of your free t-shirts every day and you find yourself saying things like "Well when I was in school..." or "This one time on campus..." People will look at you weird because you sound ridiculous, but it's just because they truly don't understand the magic behind YOUR college campus experience.

To fully understand what it's like being a GCU grad missing campus life, I guess you had to be there. Just in case, though, you need to just know this:

LOPES do campus life right!

There's so much energy and life on campus happening every day. You can't attend GCU and not have at least an ounce of pride for what's happening on campus.

From Welcome Week

There's a moment in every young lope's life where they are overcome with both anxiety and excitement. It's the moment that hundreds of students and faculty members surround their car, cheer for them, unpack their car for them, etc. Welcome Week is just a glimpse of campus ambiance.

There's no place like home, but there's definitely no place like GCU.

To College Sports...Yes, I'm Talking About Lopes Basketball

Alright, so it's no secret that the student section for GCU Basketball is absolutely crazy (literally, check the news). We have the craziest fans, amazing team, and the best mascot ever. If you didn't attend any of the games, did you really go to GCU? (The answer is NO!)

To THUNDER, America's favorite mascot.

Seriously, I mentioned the mascot before but I'll mention him again. He's the best! He'd be participating in campus events, cheering on sports team, or walking on campus to keep everyone's spirits up. Thunder sightings are definitely a highlight, but if you never left your dorm you missed out on it.

To billions of social gatherings

You've got clubs, inter-mural sports, dances, themed nights, hall events, etc. The normal college experience that you only really get when you get involved on campus. Please just don't sleep on it.

And finally, to graduation!

I'm telling you graduation is the crazy big goodbye party you don't want to miss. It is the neat and perfect bow to wrap up the best college experience.

College students that choose to be uninvolved in everything truly miss out on the best experiences and won't know it until their college grads.

I miss dorm and apartment life on campus and the ability to see my friends in a matter of minutes just by walking down the hall. I miss having a free gym and the many opportunities to go to a concert. I miss bowling on campus and designing club meetings. Yes, I even miss the food sometimes.

I may never miss the parking situation going on on campus, but college was WAY more than being frustrated at the little things.

What college grads miss the most about campus life is the community. And yes, GCU does that super well.

It's no wonder that we made it in the top 10 best campuses in the U.S. Seriously, though, if you haven't heard of the GCU Havocs or the LOPES at all, are you living under a rock?

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
