Leaving home for the first time may be one of the scariest things you will ever do. As you pull out of your driveway and watch your childhood home fade away, it might feel like a chapter is over too soon, and those countless goodbyes might feel like forever-farewells.
It's stressful and terrifying and overwhelming and you'll probably consider turning around, hiding under your bed and Googling "how to drop out of college before you even start." I'm not here to tell you not to do these things. If anything, I want you to know how important it is feel all these God-awful emotions.
The entire college process is unlike anything you have ever experienced. There is so much change, growth and learning ahead of you; but you already know that. You've decided to start this journey and you want all that good stuff and it's so tempting to wish away that awkward first week. Why not just skip to the fun parts?
As strange as it may sound, the nerves and unsureness that you may be feeling now, will be one of the most iconic and unforgettable parts of your college career. When you look back at those horrible ice breaker games you were forced to play at orientation, you will remember the equally uncomfortable faces of the other people in your group and it will make you smile. Later, when you are sitting on your bed, laughing with friends, you will think of those first nights when you shed some tears and you will feel proud of how far you have come. When the end of your first semester comes and you find out you passed that class that made your stomach churn when you walked in the door on your first day, you will be so relieved. At the end of the whole ride, you will remember the good stuff, but it is those awkward beginnings that make it even sweeter.
While you should never let anxiety overwhelm you, embrace the nerves and know that they are part of the process. (Note: If those feelings don't fade over time don't ever be afraid to reach out to the helpful people at your school's counseling center). When your head hits your pillow after a long orientation weekend know that you are on your way. This new chapter is only beginning and it will be amazing as long as you let it be.
