Fresh off of rivalry weekend, college football fans can agree that they were certainly spellbound from the upsets and excitements that rocked the College Football Playoff's rankings. Powerhouses like Notre Dame, the undefeated Miami, and the face of college football, The University of Alabama, all fell to rivals ranked below them.
With the abrupt change that is to ensue within the top ranked teams in the coming days, there should be no denying that college football, in particular, is one of the more exciting sports an individual can take the time to follow.
College football is always unexpected. Unlike the NFL, upsets take place often, and even though a team may have a better ranking and reported talent, they may not exactly be guaranteed with a win at the end of the day. That just comes with the culture of players at this level, and it's so entertaining.
As a junior at Penn State, I can only admit to keeping up with the likes of college football for the past three seasons, but it's made me regret not getting into it much earlier. For the most part, there are new top-ranked teams every year. Every year holds something new, and that's another factor that makes this sport so special. I've related to this type of enthusiasm from my school when we were unranked and still going through a "rebuilding" stage during my freshmen year, and pretty much up until the unforgettable win against Ohio State that occurred last year in the 2016 season.
Bowl games and final four announcements will be official by the College Football Playoff Selection Committee in the coming weeks, and boy can you say they have a tough job ahead of them. With the losses of many top teams this past weekend, it's now up to the committee members to rearrange the top 10 rankings to what they see fit.
These weekly decisions are also another part of the craziness that is brought to you by college football. The committee takes many aspects about a team into consideration when providing them with a ranking, ranging from their overall record, their strength of schedule, and their brand name (frankly). So, needless to say college rankings can be just as unexpected as the upset games themselves - yes, I am referring to Penn State being snubbed from the playoffs last year after winning the Big 10 Championship title but it's okay, I'm okay.
So I hope everyone enjoys the last month we have to indulge in such a thrilling sport, and to those who maybe haven't taken the time to experience the fun of it all just yet, I encourage you to begin tuning in this weekend. I'm sure you will not be disappointed.
