Make Smart Decisions.
I know it’s hard being on a meal plan in college. You eat whatever they put out for the night and you might not have that many choices. Just look for good options such as grilled chicken, cooked vegetables, salad bars, omelettes and grilled meats.
Ask For Dismantled Food.
Some foods at the dining hall have healthy components but they are surrounded by unhealthy components that you want to avoid. You can modify foods that you get like not eating the bun with a sandwich because you just want to eat the meat and vegetables.
Always Take Fruit.
Almost every college offers you to select a piece of fruit with your meal plan. So go ahead and take that orange or banana and save it for later! Fruit is a great snack not only is it sweet naturally but it has good essential elements for your body
Use Your Common Area.
Just because you live in the dorms don’t make that an excuse to not eat healthy. If you don’t have some sort of kitchenette in your dorm, some dorm halls have a common area. It might be a little dirty and dingy but you can buy your own pots, pans and eating utensils and keep them in your room to use when you cook in the kitchen.
Use Your Microwave.
Some students don’t realize the different things that you can actually make in a microwave. They aren’t just used for bagel bites and hot pockets. You can make eggs, steamer bags of vegetables or rice. In fact, some of the companies even have small complete meals that come in steam bags for the microwave.
Keeps Snacks in Your Dorm.
Keep things like granola bars, nuts, cereal etc. These are things that you don’t need to have a mini fridge for. They provide a good quick snack to hold you over until class is out or if your just feeling a little hungry during that late night study sessions. These types of options are better then going to the vending machine and getting a candy bar and bag of chips.
Drinking
Yes, we are college students and I’m not going to try and tell you that you shouldn’t drink extra calories because I do myself, but you should limit yourself. Whether you limit the amount of drinks you have in the night or maybe the amount of times you drink a week, limiting alcohol will help with the extra sugar storage that your body absorbs from the alcohol.
Eating healthy is all done in moderation. If you can manage to moderate these few things and what you intake of the fattening foods your dining hall as to offer, you will be well on your way to getting a healthier you! Not only is eating healthy hard to do, it’s even harder to do in college with limited options. Make sure you tell your friends that you want to start eating healthy so that they can support you and help you out along the way. It will make your new healthy life easier!
