The Struggle Of Eating Healthy On A College Meal Plan

The Struggle Of Eating Healthy On A College Meal Plan

This is why everyone gains the freshman 15.

As I enter the dining hall, I know that I will have to make a couple of laps around to figure out what I finally want to eat. I pass the rows of pizza, burgers, and french fries as I try and look for something that is better for me. I pass the desserts that are filled with cookies and cakes knowing that I shouldn't pig out on them. Everyone has heard the tale of the college freshman coming home for the summer and everyone noticing that they have gained the freshman fifteen. In my opinion, one of the man causes of this is from the lack of healthy choices that dining halls offer.

I am not trying to fat-shame anyone or make fun of people who weigh more, this is about eating healthy. By only having the options of junk foods, it does not let me feel like myself. I feel more sluggish and I'm not really motivated to do anything. When I go into the dining hall, I see plenty of unhealthy options, such as pizza or pasta, but the healthy options are limited to the salad bar, or sometimes the meal that is prepared for the day will be healthy, but no one wants to eat the same meal for lunch and dinner every day for a whole semester. There have also been multiple times where the meal of the day has just not been edible due to it either being raw or overcooked.

This may be because where I live on campus, the dining hall that is the closest is the smaller one, therefore there are not as many options as the larger one, but I have been to the larger one and it's not much better. There a couple more options at the further dining hall, such as a vegan station, but the problem with that is that the meals are served on very small plates, so you would have to get multiple plates just to fill up.

I'm not saying to take away all the junk food because just like everyone else, I also like to indulge in these foods, but sometimes it is just too much. I feel like we just need to incorporate more healthy options in our dining halls so that people can make the choice whether they would like to have something healthy or unhealthy. For people who either want to go onto a diet, or just like to eat healthier foods, they should have more options.

10 Things People Ask Me About My Brumotactillophobia

These are the questions that I always hear when someone finds out that I can't stand my food touching.

Brumotactillophobia is the fear of food touching other food. Yes, it is weird, but I recently found out that I am not the only one with this disorder. As I can imagine, I am probably not the only sufferer who - when someone finds out about it - have heard these common questions:

1. Why can't you have your food touch?

Giphy

That reason is: I have no idea. For as long as I can remember, the thought of it all just disgusts me. I did do some research on this disorder, however, and found that it is actually a common and mild form of OCD. It mostly stems in children of a young age, because they typically feel as though their plate is the only thing that they can control.

2. You know that your food ends up in the same place, right?

Giphy

As a matter of fact, yes, I do. I know what happens to food after you eat it, and I don't care. It can go to the same place in the end, but it will get there separately.

3. What do you do at buffets or Thanksgiving?

Giphy

I do what everyone else does: I eat. Just because I separate my food, doesn't mean I am not eating what is there. If I happen to have to go back for seconds because I didn't have enough room on my first plate for everything, then I will.

4. Don't you put gravy on mashed potatoes?

Giphy

First of all, I love gravy and mashed potatoes. It doesn't weird me out because gravy is a sauce, and sauces go on your foods. It's like ketchup or other condiments.

5. What about foods like salads or casseroles?

Giphy

To answer, foods that belong together go together. I don't know why that is okay for me, but it is. For instance, Shepherd's Pie is meat and vegetables mixed together with mashed potatoes on top and cooked in the oven. If those ingredients were separated onto a plate as a meal, I wouldn't mix them, but the fact that they are already mixed as it's own food, then it is okay with me.

6. What makes it weird for you to mix your plate together?

Giphy

To be frank, I have no idea. Some sufferers have a thing for the textures, others with taste. Personally, I have yet to pinpoint what it is about it that freaks me out.

7. What happens if the juice from one food touches another?

Giphy

Nope. Not today. I will literally stop eating and just go hungry.

8. What happens if some of your food does touch?

Giphy

If this unfortunate event happens, I typically try to eat around the parts that have touched and throw the contaminated parts away.

9. Does this mean you're a picky eater?

Giphy

Absolutely not! I might be picky about the layout of my plate, but I am a true foodie. I can eat pretty much anything.

10. Is that the only eating quirk you have?

Giphy

On top of not liking my food touch, I also have to eat one item at a time, and it usually from least favorite to favorite. For example, say I had a plate with steak, potatoes, and broccoli on it. I would probably eat it in the order of all of the broccoli, all of the potatoes, and then the steak.

Yeah, it is all very weird, but I don't mind. I know there are others out there like me, so here's to all of the people who suffer from Brumotactillophobia.

A True Review Of Lumpy’s BBQ

A review on a barbecue restaurant in Clementon, New Jersey.

Let me just say that I have truly never heard of this place until my pregnant friend had a hankering for some barbecue ribs. I am definitely not the one to try new things, and I was honestly hoping my friend wanted our same old Chipotle gig again.

The exterior met me with a sign that read "No Spitting Allowed; fine between $5.00-$100.00." Immediately, I was mad at this friend of mine for bringing me to such an odd establishment.

However, upon looking over the menu, I was dazzled. Everything was affordable and boy did they have some good southern options. Cornbread, mac and cheese, baby back ribs, pulled pork, brisket, chicken wings... YOU NAME IT.

Let me tell you, the price was AFFORDABLE. I'm talking probably less than you would spend at Chipotle, or about the same.

A big girl like myself was very hungry! I ordered mac and cheese, cornbread, potato salad, a pulled pork sandwich, AND a fountain soda for LESS than 15 dollars! It was amazing. The cornbread was sweet and moist. The mac and cheese was a gooey perfection. The potato salad was thick, but not too thick. The pulled pork was smothered in a delicious barbecue sauce, unlike some places that are stingy with their sauce.

Now, if you're a fan of a place like Famous Dave's, but you're out here balling on a budget, then this is definitely the spot to grab your next meal! I'm not saying that they're underrated, but boy are they underrated.

You can eat in or you can take your food to go. Either way, I am sure it will be absolutely delicious. They even have daily lunch specials on their already affordable food.

The only thing I can't vouch for is the dessert because, unfortunately, I was too full to get any. But they have various pies and cheesecakes that I can't wait to try during my future visits there.

Definitely, money well spent. 10/10 recommend.
