As many know, the ever so delicious Chipotle has run into a little bit of trouble within its health department. On October 21st, it became public knowledge that an E Coli outbreak had affected 6 resturants in Washington, and Oregon.
For those that do not know, E Coli is a painful sickness to come down with. It causes severe pain in the lower abdomen, extreme flu like symptoms, and other horrifying symptoms that I don't even want to think about. At least eight out of the twenty total infected customers have been hospitalized. Although they have grown intensely ill, there are thankfully zero fatalities.
One unlucky victim of the outbreak is a woman named Charmaine Mode, a pharmacist from Kelso, Washington. Mode, like many others, ate at a Chipotle restaurant in Vancouver, and within four days was the sickest she's ever been. She has aggressively filed a lawsuit against the company for $75,000. This is just one of many lawsuits coming from the former customers of Chipotle that fell ill.
Steve Ells, Chipotle founder, Chairman, and CO-CEO has founded company on high standards of freshness, buying local, and organic ingredients. With that being said, this (very) big "oops" is shocking. However, not that surprising... this is now the THIRD outbreak of a food born illness from Chipotle over the past FOUR months. So far, the investigators have linked the contaminated food with the local farms they buy from. In order to determine a cause, the investigators are interviewing the customers that the E Coli effected, to see what exactly they ordered to see if there are commonalities in the ingredients they consumed. So far, no cause has been determined.
In order to reduce the risk of the disease spreading further, Chipotle made the executive precautionary decision to close all 43 stores within the two states temporarily. When these stores will reopen is unknown, but hopefully soon because like this little boy says for all of us, “Chipotle is my life”.Personally, I'm still going to eat at Chipotle (sorry mom), its just too yummy to resist!
