You feel it swell within your throat. Your nose is a river of slime pooling down to your lips. Your head feels like a brick and you are hoping any second it will subside. You're constantly using tissues that are stashed on and in your bed and on the floor, and there's an unseemly wad of them in the trashcan. Your Theraflu isn’t doing the trick and you're constantly Neti-potting. You chills are rising rapidly. Your head feels like it's on fire. You know what this dreaded, draining monster is doing to you.
You have a cold.
Here are some of the products that will be your best friend through the cold season:
Neti Pot or a saline solution
The Neti pot will help you release all your congestion in your sinuses, creating a flow of grossness for a few minutes. But after using this product, you can breathe out of both nostrils instead of having a clogged nose.
Nyquil and Dayquil
This will be your constant companion. In order to work, you must keep on top of it. Nyquil and Dayquil are liquid gold when it comes to colds. Nyquil will help you sleep soundly at night while keeping your coughing and pain symptoms at bay. Dayquil will keep you up and moving throughout the day and will suppress your aches and pains.
Cloud-like tissues
Have you ever had hard tissues that scuff up your nose and eventually rub your nose raw? I recommend getting any product that has ultra soft tissue instead of the papery, one plied sheets.
Cough drops
This is a must have when you are out on the town, at the store, or traveling. These little drops can save yourself and your friends. These will suppress your coughing restrain and soothe your irritated throat. You can never have enough of these floating around in your purse or bag.
Vick's VapoRub
Apply the rub before you go to sleep. VapoRub relieves the inflammation and congestion you may have in your nose and throat.
Sleep
Sleep is a necessity for all human beings, especially when you are sick. Studies have shown that you should get more rest when you are sick so get as much rest as you can or what you feel is necessary. If you can't sleep, at least rest and stay in bed. It will be the best thing for you to do to get rid of that cold.
Netflix
We all know this is going to be a constant companion in college. When you are sick, you don't want to be doing anything except sleep or watch TV. Netflix is always a great source to go to. You can catch up on your seasons of New Girl, Friends, or The Walking Dead while you sniffle into a tissue. Netflix is always there for you.
Chicken Noodle Soup
Any soup in general will work for the common cold. I feel like when we are sick, we crave any soup we can get our hands on. Chicken Noodles is always the best one to go to, especially when it's mom's homemade chicken noodle soup, right?
Hydration is Key
Like the doctor always said, "Lots of liquids." Hydration is key when you are sick. You want to prevent a dry throat and dehydration. If you are sick of drinking water, try fruit juices, Popsicles, or putting a little flavor to your water. Avoid drinking anything carbonated while you have a cold.
Steam
Steam helps clear the passageways and clears congestion. Turn on your shower and let the steam pour into the room.
