If you're anything like me, coffee is your lifeblood. I'm talkin' three cups a day, at the minimum with a super sense of smell that can detect a coffeeshop from three blocks away. I've spent the past two and a half years searching for the best lattes, macchiatos, drips and shots in the city and here's what I've got so far:
Coffeetree Roasters, Bakery Square (and various other locations)
Coffeetree is my favorite local chain in the 'Burgh. Not only will they make pretty much anything you ask for, including my personal favorite, a brown sugar cinnamon soy latte, they always have a killer drip coffee that's sure to kickstart your day when you need it most.
Crazy Mocha, Market Square (and various other locations)
Crazy Mocha is well-known by the goat in their logo and their, well, crazy mochas! Another great hometown chain, CM has a convenient location by campus in Market Square and has way cheaper drinks than the neighboring Starbucks. Special shout out to their Pumpkin Pie Latte, giving the original PSL a real run for it's money.
La Prima Espresso Company, Strip District
If you're in the market for an authentic Italian espresso shot, head on over to the Strip District for La Prima. This place has a great crowd and fantastic baristas that make a mean cappuccino.
Big Dog Coffee, South Side
This sweet shop is practically a part of history, beginning as Kohler Bakery in 1889, and eventually making it's way out of the Kohler bloodline to become Big Dog today. Not only do they have delightful coffee all around, but they have amazing treats like gelato and pastries too!
Commonplace Coffee, Squirrel Hill (and other locations)
Commonplace is anything but common, with the greatest drip coffee in Allegheny County. The atmosphere is calming and hip, perfect for both a study sesh or a coffee date. I recommend the honey cinnamon cappuccino!
Espresso A Mano, Lawrenceville
Not only does this adorable shop in Lawrenceville have incredible speciality coffees, but they pride themselves on their incredible hospitality. They have such a great shop with garage style doors that pull up when it's nice outside. It's definitely the place to be!
I still have a year to continue my great pursuit for the best cups in the city, but these are just a few of my favorites... happy sipping!
