For Some College Women, A LOT Of Thought Goes Into Their Outfits

A lot of women believe the clothes you wear really can affect you in many ways.

You open your closet door. Maybe you stand there for a few minutes. Maybe you stand there for hours.

You start pulling out outfits. That pink tank top with the colorful flowers all over, low-cut jeans and your pink flats. The black T-shirt, baggy gray sweatpants and black running sneakers. The white off the shoulders shirt, bright yellow flowing skirt and your best pair of heels.

Whatever you choose and however long it took, so many factors go into picking an outfit.

"Honestly, what I wear depends on three things: the weather, my mood and what I have planned for the day," University of South Florida student Christina Adepoju said. "I always check the weather because I hate it when I really wear a nice outfit, but I'm not able to feel pretty in it because it rains. My outfit also depends on my plans for the day. If I have an important event or interview, I'll dress up more than I normally would because I want to make a good impression."

For many females, what you want to be seen as also goes into what you wear. Your outfit is the first thing people see when they meet you. It's the absolute first impression they make of you. If you want to be seen with respect then you wear professional clothing. If you want to be seen as fun then you would probably wear a romper or a fun dress.

Scientists call this "enclothed cognition". Adam Hajo and Adam Galinsky, professors at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, said enclothed cognition involves "the co-occurrence of two independent factors -- the symbolic meaning of the clothes and the physical experience of wearing them ." They conducted an experiment where they put people in a lab coat, a painters coat and no coat at all. They had the subjects perform tests while wearing each coat and not wearing either coat. The results found that people wearing the lab coat paid more attention and did better than the painter's coat and no coat at all.

We adopt the characteristics of our outfits. On campus, there are a variety of different looks.

There are the students that go with the casual outfits. They don't pay any mind to what people think. When it comes to a face full of makeup, their hair in place and a killer dress, these people opt for the t-shirt, jeans or sweatpants and sneakers look.

"T-shirt and shorts are usually my go-to. Comfort is my main goal. If my clothes were uncomfortable it would be harder to focus in class. It takes me a minute to pick out clothes most of the time," says USF graduate Krista Serocki.

Business analytics and information major Lian Fu says it only takes her two minutes to pick an outfit. "Black running shorts and a t-shirt. Takes me two mins. I'm not here to look good, I'm here to get an education and learn what I need to in order to be successful and graduate."

Advertising and public relations major, Lindsey Dickerson, also goes the casual route when it comes to clothes. She believes being comfortable in what you are wearing can impact your performance.

"I think comfort plays a big role in doing well in class or on an exam. In order to get the mark you desire, you need to be comfortable and confident with what you're wearing"

USF graduate, Neena Pacholke, says that comfy is the way to go. Her go-to outfit was always a t-shirt and a pair of leggings.

There are the students that mix the casual and dressy look. A comfortable pair of skinny jeans, boots or heels, oversized sweaters or shirts. Their hair is the perfect balance of not over done but still cute.

International Studies major Paige Livingston is very much into fashion. It takes her an hour to perfect the comfy-but-still-dressy look. She goes for some wide pants, a blouse or t-shirt and a pair of cute sneakers or sandals.

USF student, Gaby Valiente, says even though she is there for her education, she tries to dress nice. As she says "you never know who you are going to meet one day!"

"In the summer I wear some cute fabric or jean shorts and a nice blouse or t-shirt. When I'm in a rush I just choose a plain dress and pair it with some cool sneakers. In the winter it's black jeans every day, leggings, cute turtleneck sweaters and boots."

New Jersey City University graduate Alexis Thorpe Gutierrez says the first day of school she tries to look her best. But as the semester goes on, she goes for a nice pair of leggings, a T-shirt and either slippers or flats.

There are the women that put extra effort into their look. They are all about looking good because it boosts their confidence. With a boosted confidence, they feel they can take on anything in school. A cute dress, hair perfectly in place, face full of makeup and a pair of boots or stylish sneakers and they are ready.

Criminology major Rachel Baxter says dressing up on exam days actually makes her test better. "I am a 100 percent believer of the theory that when you look good, you feel good! You'll never see my outfits as on point as exam day."

USF graduate Angela Candela says in order to be seen with respect, she dresses business-casual.

"I usually wear semi-professional clothes to campus, like business casual, because I think that it's important to dress how you want to be treated and I like to be treated like a professional. I usually just pick my outfits the morning I leave, depending on whatever goes. I am especially picky about my shoes because I think that those can completely change the nature of the outfit. And, I'm not sure if my clothes actually influence my grades, but I think that if someone takes a little extra time in the morning getting ready, it can be a form of self-care and self-care definitely improves your daily performance!"

So whether you go casual, in between dressy and casual or full on dressy on campus, the clothes we wear actually say a lot about how our day is going to be like.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
