Lately, I have been feeling like a bit of a Scrooge, but I realized that it wasn’t necessarily my fault as to why I’m not in the holiday spirit. I haven’t adjusted fully to what winter and the holidays entail in the south. That sounds a bit odd, I know, since the holidays themselves are the same. But, oh my, may I tell you this: Christmas in a small town from Pennsylvania is way different than it is in Atlanta, Georgia.
Christmas without snow doesn’t feel like Christmas
I used to think this was an odd thing to say, but I have realized that I have always associated the snow to when Christmas was. That would be the initial thing I saw, before all of the lights and trees of course. There is something about the fluffy clouds of snow on Christmas morning that make you feel at peace. Right now in my hometown, they’re facing a lot of snow and this past week even had a delay of school. That hardly ever happens, but here in Georgia, it happens often.
Georgia isn’t prepared for adverse weather
Literally, Georgia can’t handle bad weather. They don’t have the resources to take care of the road. The past two years, since I’ve been here, I have witnessed a “State of Emergency” due to the fact that there was “bad weather”. A southerners’ favorite line to tell you when you talk about the snow where you’re from is, “But, we get ice here”! As if ice doesn’t come with snow!
Everything is monogrammed
Everyone’s presents suddenly have their initials monogrammed on it. This is not something you can get away from down south. You can find a monogrammed item at any store you go to, on any item.
Don’t get me wrong, I love the people I have met down here and I will admit I have adjusted to the weather. I just finally realized that maybe I do miss snow a little more than I thought.
