Holiday Invasions

Ah, ‘tis the season for Christmas… to ruin every other holiday. It seems that, each year, Christmas pushes itself into the books earlier and earlier. As someone who loves Halloween more than anything, I cannot stand this unfortunate series of events.

This year alone, I have noticed that, at the beginning of October, Fall decor is already on clearance shelves in stores and Halloween candy is already going on sale. THIS IS NOT A DRILL! And this is most certainly not okay.

I’ll admit: I have my biases. I hate Christmas. You read that right: I hate Christmas. Even if I still considered myself a Christian, I would dislike everything Christmas seems to stand for in present days. People seem to forget that Christmas has religious meaning. No, people, it is not just a time where you get ridiculous amounts of presents that you probably do not deserve and will likely not even use after the month of December.

Christmas is in December. If you celebrate Christmas, fantastic for you, but I would love it if industries did not feel the need to monetize Christmas to the disgusting tune of forgetting the religious roots AND INVADING MY HOLIDAYS. I want to have my Halloween uninterrupted by Christmas movies (Nightmare Before Christmas being my only exception). I want to be thankful with my family for Thanksgiving before people murder each other to buy pointless things that they don’t need (I’m looking at you, Black Friday).

Come on people. You take this Christmas thing a little far. I mean, look around town. You can probably already see houses beginning to look too much like Christmas (see how I avoided that song title?). Here’s the problem, people are hardwired to take things too far. You’re passionate about Christmas and that leaves you vulnerable. Companies are pushing Christmas earlier and earlier so that they can get more and more money out of you.

And this is a PROBLEM. Christmas movies (in July, come on Hallmark Channel, I see what you’re doing! Give me my summer!), Christmas TV episodes, Christmas music, Christmas sales…. If everything has to be Christmas all the time, then why can’t people ACT like it is Christmas all the time? Christmas is the season of kindness, forgiving, and giving, but the second it is over, life turns into hate, hate, hate and give-me, give-me, give-me NOW NOW NOW.

Christmas: If you’re going to take over my other holidays, can you at least make people see that they’re acting irrationally?

What drives me crazy is that people think that you only need to be kind around Christmas, but even when Christmas invades, people are cruel. If I want to be kind to people or give gifts to my family, I’m seen as strange? How does that make any sense? If Christmas can’t be limited to the Christmas season, why should the kindness of Christmas be?

If we have to play Christmas music from October until February, Christmas movies from October through March (and then again in July), and have our Christmas decorations up until… do people even remember to take those down?... Why can’t we treat people like human beings year-round too?

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
