Over the course of my very short nineteen years of life, I have come into contact with a lot of people. Whether they were acquaintances, friends, best friends or more, I have always noticed their effect on me, whether it was positive or negative. There are some people I may not remember and there are some I choose not to remember. The people you are closest to in your life are not just people who are around you a significant amount, they are not people that you are forced to be around, and they are not people that you sometimes hang out with when the timing is convenient. The people who are truly close to you are the people that you choose, and the people who choose you.
I don’t mean chose me as in decided to be my friend, or picked me first to be on their team in gym class basketball. I mean people who have chose for you to be in their lives and have chose to always keep your best interests in mind- always.
The people who choose you will be as loyal to you as you are to them. These people will be there when life is really good, and they will be there when life is really, really bad. They will listen to you, and they will help you through it, and soon enough you will be back to the good. Sometimes, life is just hard, and knowing that you have just a little bit of help in this big world goes a long way.
The knowledge that someone is completely, selflessly invested in your happiness is one of the best feelings in the world, but in order to reap the benefits of being chosen, you have to choose them back. The people that I’ve chosen in college have truly been the most positive impact on my life so far simply because wanting the best for someone and knowing the best is wanted for you truly is as good as it gets.
I have had people in my life that I wish more than anything would’ve chosen me, but they didn’t, and that is a hard pill to swallow. I have had people in my life who have chosen me, and I haven't chose them back, and in hindsight those are some of my biggest regrets.
If you find people who choose you in life, the best advice I can give to you is to keep them in your life. They will help you, they will push you to be your best, and they will go to bat for you when they know you need them. Choose them, too.
