Childish Gambino All Grown Up?

Exams are finally over, it's getting close to the holidays, and I actually have an article for the month of December (better late than never). This week, I finally get to review and cover Childish Gambino's new song, Redbone! As always, a little preview from myself.

Who is Childish Gambino?

From rapper to television actor and now singer, Danny Glover, AKA Childish Gambino, has done it all. From the fast rapping back in the early 2010's, to playing Troy in the NBC hit show Community, and now a potential singing career, this man is really talented. The link to his new song, Redbone, has been provided below this paragraph:

The Review:

Alright, I am going to address the biggest concern of this article, this song is really weird, and I still think that's an understatement. The beat of this song is quite psychedelic in nature, and you can barely understand what he's saying. Yes, if you didn't know, Childish Gambino is actually the one singing in the entire song. After listening to his rapping skills during this decade, it's definitely a music departure few artists dare to take, like Taylor Swift going from Country to Pop music. I can't lie and say I am a fan of this song, and which I am not, but for some odd reason, I don't honestly hate it.

Artists go through times where they slightly update their sound, and apparently, he is at that given point in time. Do I understand this move? No, and I probably never will. It seems Childish Gambino wanted to grow up while the rest of the world didn't want them to, and this is the best way I can describe this album. I think he wants to go through a change and this is the first step. Will it be a successful change? Only time will tell.

My Conclusion:

This is a way different Childish Gambino than we have ever seen before, and I think the world has to start adjusting to it. I am not a fan of the song, but he could be reaching audiences never expected before and just that thought could be worth the risk itself. From rapper to actor, and now singer, Childish Gambino is growing up, and his sound, and possibly his image, is going with him.

I don't quite grasp the concept of what he is trying to lean towards with the new single, but maybe someone else will. Was I disappointed in this song? Sort of. Do I hate this song? Not really, but I just really don't care for it. However, I do wish the best for Mr. Danny Glover. It's hard to change your sound, and he is one of the few brave souls to try, so just for that, I will give him credit for it.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

The transition into adulthood is never easy

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
