10 Things Every Cheerleader Understands
  1. The media's inaccurate portrayal of cheerleading. Hollywood depicts cheerleaders as girls who wear skimpy uniforms and have nothing going on in their heads. They are typically part of a clique for mean girls and rule the school. In real life, this is not true. Yes, the uniforms can be skimpy, but if the skirts were too long we would be restricted in motion. Since cheer involves gymnastics and stunting, that would be a hazard.
  2. Spelling out words in my head to chants I've learned. Certain cheers I’ve learned spell out words, so whenever I write out those words, the cheers go through my head automatically.
  3. Being able to do my splits anywhere. I love pulling my splits out anywhere, although I admit sometimes it’s harder than other days if I haven’t stretched in a while. Nonetheless, it’s nice to have the skill. I'm not the most flexible person I know, but being able to do my right/left splits has never left me.
  4. Cheer lingo. To an outsider, the terms we throw around mean nothing. They become bamboozled when we say "extension," "full," "needle," "basket toss," "lib," and so on. These refer to stunting, which is when a group of three girls (two basses, and a backspot) throw a flyer into the air to accomplish certain stunts. Stunting has always been my favorite part of cheer, and I always feel so accomplished and proud of my group when we hit a stunt perfectly.
  5. Wanting to stunt all the time. When you can throw up cool stunts, you want to do it everywhere and take a picture. In a way it’s showing off, but to us it’s more than just that. It’s our passion and we are always ready to up our picture game to a new level.
  6. Faking it. Being able to stand on the sidelines all night and look happy is a art, especially if it’s raining out. Or performing a routine for judges at a competition. Both involve shoving your nerves down your throat and looking like there is no other place you’d rather be. “Fake it, till you make it”.
  7. Too many cheer bows- They accumulate like socks in my house, I find them all over the place. We have bows for every occasion, but once you’re done with cheer they just sit around waiting to be worn again.
  8. Making a second family. With any sport, your team becomes your second family. We spend a lot of time together at practice and games. During that time we are working hard, but enjoying inside jokes and silly antics to keep us going. I’ve definitely made some friends for life through cheer and strengthened other friendships.
  9. Cheer Camp. This is a cheerleader's worst nightmare! ...Not really. It’s more bittersweet; it involves three days of hard work in the burning sun and making sure to stay hydrated. We get up at seven and start right after breakfast, and don’t see our beds until after midnight. The positive part is being there as a team and growing together while bonding. We focus on learning new material to take home and show off to the student section at football games.
10. NEVER tell a cheerleader that cheer isn’t a sport. This is the number one thing you should never say. It is a complete lie -- we lift actual girls above our heads and throw them to impossible heights. It is one of the biggest contact sports, and it involves a lot of hard work and focus. One wrong move or slip and someone could be seriously injured. Secondly, we do compete. Try looking up competitive cheer. The higher the level (high school, college, etc), the better the skills are, and the more complex the stunts are. We work hard to entertain and to prove to others that it is a real sport. Don’t just dismiss it because it “looks easy” to you; there’s so much that goes into it.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
