10 Stages Of A Charlestonian's Reaction To Winter

When is summer coming back?

Here in Charleston it has finally begun to get chilly. Just this time last week I was wearing shorts. So you can imagine the uproar of Charleston when we step outside and we actually need layers that don't include a bathing suit and a cover-up. Here are the top 10 stages Charlestonians and people who live in warm climates experience when we get that winter breeze.

1. Confusion

"What do you mean I can't wear my shorts outside?! What else am I supposed to wear?!" We go through a faze where it is almost impossible to fathom that we can't go out wearing our beach gear.

2. Anger

We cry out "What did we do to deserve this?" Or "What kind of messed-up hell have I awakened to?" Then the rest of winter is spent with a permanent stank face.

3. Pride

It's the big fish fishing scenario. When we say it snowed, we really mean 'I found ice in the puddle the size of a pinecone'. And our 'snowmen' end up looking like essentially icey mud pies. And trust me, we are very proud of those mud pies.

4. Stubbornness

This one applies to me especially. When it is cold AND the morning, there is literally nothing that will get me out of bed. Because why on earth would I leave my warm cocoon of blankety goodness to get out of bed and face a room that feels like Jack Frost was my roommate.

5. Terror

Since it doesn't really get cold, it doesn't ever snow. So when it ices just a little bit, school is canceled and everyone goes home. Oh, heaven forbid there is one icicle on the bridge because it'll end up being closed too.

6. Frostbite

We aren't used to dressing warmly so most of the time we will end up wearing a large coat with flip flops. Needless to say, that can sometimes be pretty dangerous.

7. Very Warm

Or you have the people who hate to be cold, hence why they live in the warm states, and so in order to go anywhere they take blankets. And I am proud to say that I am one of these people. If you are too, invest in a Snuggie. They are life changing.

8. Denial

These people refuse to believe that it's winter. Since the weather in the south, especially Charleston where I'm from, is so temperamental most people just disregard the cold as one of those freak storms we always get. Once a week.

9. Stress Over What To Wear

Since we live on the coast, our winter lasts about maybe a month. We start tanning in February. So because of this, we only own maybe one or two winter coats. Personally, I have no idea how to dress for the cold. (See #7.) I just wear a snuggie and call it a day.

10. Hatred

After about one and a half weeks of our so-called winter, we are ready for summer again. So now we just increase our complaining about the weather on Facebook to include a few crying faces and pleas for spring. So we can start wearing our beloved flip-flops again.

And...just another gif that truly relays how we feel about winter being here.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
