I’m a Christian, I classify myself as a republican, I’m not a huge fan of feminism, I’m pro-life, I don’t particularly place myself heavily into the LGBT activist community and if you judged me on reading just those words alone, then I have proven a point. You see, I do not care about your opinions and you may call me uneducated. That is beyond the point.
We turn on the news, we log into Facebook, we scroll up and down on Instagram and what do we see? Hate. At this point in my life, I have come to the stage where I do not care how others live their lives. I have my opinions and you have yours, and that’s OK. How you live your life is solely up to you. Now that doesn’t mean that I’ll be too fond of you and it doesn’t mean that we’ll be best friends, but I won’t leave hate comments on your posts because I disagree with your values. Live your life how you want, but stop beating the dead horse every chance you get on a social media outlet.
We have been raised in a culture with media at our fingertips. I mean you hand an iPhone to a baby and they automatically know how to unlock it and navigate their way to the camera. We also live in a world with violence, racism, hatred, bigotry, biased media and far too many opinions. All these opinions get shoved down each other’s throats in every aspect of media out there. What’s the matter in the world is that we’re all too busy sharing propaganda towards our opinions and beliefs, and critically destructing one another’s values, that we have lost sight of what this world truly needs -- more love. It’s not about which presidential candidate would be best in office (because quite frankly they all suck), but it’s making sure the opposing party knows just how idiotic they are for supporting whoever they choose to support.
We spend too much time pointing fingers and name calling that we forget every person is entitled to their own opinion. Social media and the news has become a mass of evil and name calling that we have forgotten to recognize the beautiful gift of life that we are blessed with every day when we wake up. Instead of focusing on the beautiful lives that were taken amidst the Orlando terrorist attack, we chose to parade images of the terrorist himself (name not worthy of mentioning), and got lost in the issue of gun control. I’m not saying these two are not important but how about a little more humanity? Instead of showing assault weapons and pictures of the man himself, show all the lives lost on that horrific night and the support of the civilians donating blood. We need to see less evil and more humanity.
Tell me this, when is the last time you talked to your neighbor? When is the last time you performed a random act of kindness? When is the last time you simply told somebody you loved them just for the hell of it? You see, we spend so much of our time condescending others by our opinions that it has consumed our life so much though that it takes up every aspect of media. It’s time that we stop sharing all the nasty articles on politics, etc. (there are plenty more ways to educate yourself than through someone’s shared Facebook article), and time we start sharing what is good in this world. It’s time we start loving each other and coming together to see change in the world.
As Woodrow Wilson once said, “You are here in order to enable the world to live more amply, with greater vision, with a finer spirit of hope and achievement. You are here to enrich the world.” It’s about time we start enriching the world instead of destructing it for our own sake.
