For months, my parents have been building a brand new house in a brand new city for our family to live in. It has been years in the making, but it is finally time to officially move in and start a new chapter.
As young adults we face a lot of change whether it is puberty, relationships, moving from place to place, or big life decisions like college. We are constantly experiencing new things which can be exciting for some, but for many people this is actually a very scary thing.
I used to think that change was good and I liked experiencing different things all the time however, I never realized how scary change can actually be. For instance, I have been living in the same house in the same neighborhood with the same neighbors for 20 years, and the fact that I will be moving to an entirely new place within a week is starting to become a little nerve-wrecking.
As excited as I am to decorate my new room and live in a brand new home, I can't help but think about the things I am leaving behind. My family and friends will be farther, my work will be a longer drive, and the place that I have called home for 20 years will belong to someone else. However, this is when I decided to change my perspective.
I realized that no matter what is changing in my life, I have to remind myself that it is ultimately for the better even if I cannot understand it right now.
I have to remind myself that change is necessary and most times we cannot control it because it is inevitable.
We cannot truly become the people we want to be if change doesn't happen.
We cannot be afraid of change because it is ultimately what starts new beginnings for us. Our lives will not get better by chance, but only from change.
I'm not saying change is easy, but as Frederick Douglass said, "If there is no struggle, there is no progress."
We cannot fear change. We cannot be scared to accept that this is how our life was meant to be, at least for right now.
You may not always be able to control the changes in your life and the changes within the people around you, but you do have the power to change your perspective, how you react to it all, and what you can do going forward.
The good news is that everything is temporary. Change is constant so if something isn't happening in the way you want it to, maybe time will come around or maybe it won't, but something better always will.
Goal: When life's changes seem to be harder, change myself to become stronger. Focus my energy not on fighting the old, but on building the new.
