Someone once said, "Let us never know what old age is; let us know the happiness time brings, not count the years."
Age is a state of mind. As years pass us by, we continue to celebrate the day we were born every year. Whether it's getting drunk at a bar, a party, a day out shopping or dinner with your loved ones, birthdays are celebrated. However, you always hear those that are older complain about birthdays. To me, it breaks my heart when someone of any age refers to their birthdays as "just another day". Heres why we should stop dreading the older we get and the physical aging that comes with it...
Birthdays are absolutely incredible. It is a celebration of you being alive. On one specific day years ago, we were born. Whether you believe in god, the universe, or some other form of higher power, you were put here for a reason. That higher power that you believe in, no matter how strongly you believe in it , decided to bless the world with your soul on a specific day at a specific time. That is worth celebrating when it comes around every year.
It also often goes tragically and silently forgotten that we all have purpose. There is something on this earth you were meant to do and someone on this earth you were meant to meet. Never forget that that power or force or form of God that you believe in put you here to do just that.
Life can be beautifully tragic. There is so much fragility behind life that as humans we don't even understand until we see the life of someone we know ends. Why is that? Why do we suddenly care when someone dies? Doesn't that mean we should realize and fully comprehend the importance of birthdays and feeling blessed on that day? Take a look around. You are alive. The moment you are currently in is yours. You can do whatever you want with it. As we get older, don't dread another tally being added to your years on this earth. Celebrate the wrinkles and that high number. It means you made it another year. It means you're alive. A birthday is a day to celebrate being alive and I think that's a concept we as humans should fully understand to a deeper extent. Birthdays are something we get used to because we hear of so and so's birthdays and get notifications about birthdays everyday on Facebook... but that doesn't mean we should treat them any less extraordinary than they deserve to be.
Celebrate being alive, not only on your birthday, but everyday. So many people that have been full of passion for life and happiness and all the beauty that there is have been taken unfairly due to accidents, terrorism, and disease. Appreciate this life while you have it, and celebrate birthdays. It's a day where you celebrate this life and the day you started living it.
