Target has received an abundance of scrutiny due to their stance against HB-2 in the recent months. Some customers are banning with Target while others are standing by the national store. However, during all this chaos surrounding Target, changes have flown under the radar. Specifically, Target announced the addition of Caroline's Cart to most of their stores nationwide as of March 2016. Forever changing the shopping experience for parents of children with disabilities.
Caroline's Cart are shopping carts built for children with special needs that out grow the standard carts found in stores. Founded by Drew Ann Long, Caroline's Cart are being circulated throughout stores nationwide, and now Target is their largest retail partner. The image below is the new carts that will be circulating throughout Target stores allowing for parents to better navigate the crowded isles, by no longer having them try and push a cart and a wheelchair throughout the store.
Long stated on the cart's website that her hope is "one day all retailers will provide an equal opportunity shopping experience for parents and caregivers of special needs children." Having Target add these carts to their stores is making it one step closer for families to have that "equal opportunity shopping experience."Senior Vice President of Store Operations, Juan Galarraga, stated, "Target is always looking for new ways to make guests feel welcome in our stores and give them a more comfortable shopping experience." With Target implementing Caroline's Cart throughout their stores, that goal of making guests feel welcome reaches new heights. Galarraga stated, "Caroline’s Cart can be a game-changer for families, and we’re excited to offer this for our guests across the country." This surely is a game-changer, one that has been missed by the country due to the focus of Target's stance on HB-2.
Children have many memories of shopping with their parents, the joys of tagging along, and the sneaking of snacks into the cart as mom is not looking. That experience is not the same for children with disabilities; however, with Caroline's Cart, that can now come true for all children. Long stated, "all families deserve to have this option, so they can enjoy the freedom of shopping with their special needs child."
Many stores across the nation have generated this freedom of shopping and allowed for a better shopping experience for children with special needs and their parents, all through the use of Caroline's Cart. Target has proven its desire to provide equal opportunity not only in their stance against HB-2, but also in their unnoticed addition of Caroline's Cart.
