Making cute festive cookies could never be easier.
I love Halloween. LOVE it. Honestly though, I think candy corn is better to be looked at than tasted. Here are some super easy (and nowhere near perfect) candy corn inspired cookies.
What you'll need:
-Your favorite sugar cookie recipe.
If you want to go all out and make them from scratch, you go girl. But I don't have time for that. So Betty Crocker it is. For these packets, all you need is butter and water. Easy enough.
-Confectioners sugar
The amount all depends on how many cookies you want to make. I found that with one of these sugar cookie packets, I was able to make 10 cookies, and used two cups of sugar.
-Light Corn Syrup
I used 4 teaspoons.
-Almond Extract
I used 1/2 teaspoon. Really like almond extract? Feel free to add more to your preference.
-Food Coloring
Yellow and orange. The box I had didn't have orange, so I mixed yellow and red.
-Water
For the cookies, the icing, and to quench your thirst.
-Parchment paper & Cling wrap
Optional:
Electric Mixer, piping bag and tip. (I used a #3)
Oh, and some actual Candy Corn for that beautiful final picture.
Now bake those cookies, yo
Follow whatever sugar cookie recipe you please. If you're using a recipe like mine that involves "softened butter", DO NOT MELT THE BUTTER. I REPEAT, DO NOT MELT THE BUTTER.
Wrap that dough up
You realllllly don't want your cookies to expand too much while they're baking. To help prevent this, a good habit is to wrap the dough in cling wrap and chill it for at least 20 minutes.
After the dough is chilled, take it out of the fridge and unwrap it.
You want to take out about a tablespoon size of dough and roll it into a ball. If you have trouble because the dough is too sticky, take some confectioners sugar and dust it over your hands.
Once all the dough is rolled out and placed on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper, the next step is to flatten it
Instead of using your hands, what I did was use a mug. I dipped my mug in regular sugar (that was just in a small bowl) and then pressed the bottom of the mug into the dough. (If it sticks, you didn't use enough sugar)
Put those puppies in the oven
Not actual puppies. The cookies. By puppies I mean cookies.
While they are in the oven, you want to prepare the icing. Here is the link to where I found the recipe I used. (I doubled the recipe) http://allrecipes.com/recipe/11587/sugar-cookie-ic...
Once the icing is mixed, I divided it into three bowls. In one I mixed the yellow dye in, in another I mixed red and yellow dye in to make orange, and the last bowl I left white and added it into a piping bag. I used a piping tip, (#3) but if you don't have one feel free to do without.
Go HAM with that icing.
This step has no rhyme or reason. First I outlined the cookie with the white to create a border. Then, I tried several different techniques where I plopped the colored icing on the cookies and used toothpicks to create a sort of marbled effect.
&& Voila!
Some pretty weird but colorful cookies!
They aren't perfect, but they're definitely cute. Just like you! 😜Thanks for reading!
