This election year has been filled with a lot of hostility — more so than previous years. Yes, it's okay to disagree, because not everyone is going to have the same opinions as others. In my opinion, one thing that has been forgotten throughout this whole electoral process is that we are all human.
We bleed the same color blood, and we all have hearts. There has been so much separation throughout this whole process, and I think the true meaning of being an "American" has gotten lost somewhere. Before this election year, it has been debated whether or not racism truly exists. Thanks to a certain candidate, it has been confirmed that racism is alive and kicking.
Some people don't realize how separated we've actually become. This is one election where we need to all stand united, and yet, we see friend against friend, and family member against family member. I'm actually fearful of what will happen tomorrow.
The tone of the 2008/2012 election years was so much different than this one. I remember when President Obama won the election the first time, I was too young to vote, but I wished I could. I was in high school at the time, and classes were canceled and we had a whole red-white-and-blue themed party in our gym in which everyone was invited to. It was such a happy time, and I was excited for the things to come for our country.
I thought we were taking a step forward as a united country, and I was proud to be a citizen of the United States of America. His elections represented everything that I am proud to be a part of. Inclusion, and acceptance. Fast forward four years, and I am feeling completely different.
Now that I am finally able to, I was excited to take part in voting in this election — that is until I saw who the candidates were. Like most millennials, Bernie Sanders, had my complete support — and he still does. There is nothing that I want more than that man to become President of The United States.
If Bernie won, I would not fear for tomorrow, or next year, and so on. After tonight's result will we be united anymore? Will history repeat itself and a civil war will break out?
