Dear America,
I think perhaps we have forgotten how to be beneficial members of society. We have leaned on our barbaric instincts. We have separated and polarized our communities. We push for a sense of nationalism, but at what cost? We have completely gone against our raising. Our founding fathers created a space in which all would be respected, have rights, and create a better world for our children and grandchildren. But look at what we're doing and what we have done. Why build a wall when we are already facing a partition? Why push for the separation of individuals when we are all part of the larger system?
We need to take a good, solid look at what we are doing. We are fighting when we should be uniting. We are opposing each other when we could be supporting each other. We can talk for years about how other people are not worthy of being a Presidential candidate - but put the shoe on the other foot for a minute. Have we all been living fair lives? Have we all gone through our lives without making one mistake? There are smears on the glass houses we live in, yet we're eager to throw stones at others' equally smudged walls.
The wall. A thing in which we would use to keep groups out, to close ourselves off, to separate from others, and to dissociate with the world. But what do walls do in our homes? They protect us from the weather and the environment, they keep us warm in the cold months, they are a place of solitude, and they are places in which houses and homes are made. But - every house has a door. There is always a way to come into the house, and leave the house. So before pushing for the creation of a wall to keep unwanted groups out, remember that no house has walls and no door.
This polarization of groups inside and outside of our borders has to stop. We are doing nothing but making our situation worse. We are doing nothing but fueling fires that were started because of oppression and a distaste for other groups. We are making the problem worse by supporting those who are maximizing from this oppression and hatred - we are only setting our country up for more ridicule and attacks. We need to start thinking about how to truly fix the problem and gravitate away from our "America" syndrome and start being a worldly team-player.
America, this is your call to action. Support others, change how you view other cultures, challenge yourself to be different than what we have been shown. There are no excuses, because it is time for us to recognize how we need to do better and that we can do better.
Sincerely,
A college student hoping for better.
