Dear Everyone,
I am a middle class, white, female. I enjoy shopping, social media and various hot drinks from establishments like Starbucks. Please, please, please do not call me basic because I like these various things or any of the following: leggings, infinity scarves, boots, Frappuccino’s, the dog filter on snapchat, Uggs, or crappy pop music. While everyone is stereotyped by race, gender, social class excreta, it is without a doubt the most annoying thing in the world to be classified into a further category by the way you dress and the things you like to do! And to put the icing on the cake, the stereotype of “Basic white girl” is almost always associated with being annoying and rich. Since when does wearing a pair of pants equate to being stupid? And please tell me how a drink order can tell someone that a girl lives off of daddy’s credit card? I am neither rich, using my father’s credit card or stupid, yet I fall into all the basic white girl parameters. Just like every other “social justice issue” this could be solved easily. JUST GET TO KNOW SOMEONE BEFORE YOU MAKE AN ASSUMPTION ABOUT THEM (after all, you know what they say about assuming). There’s so much you miss about a person when you just slap a label on them. Some of the most basic white girls you know like, NFL Cheerleaders for example, are capable of doing amazing things I mean some are rocket scientists (and yes I mean real Astor-engineers, doctorates and all)! So coming from the most “basic of white girls” please don’t call me a basic white girl anymore.
ILY XOXO,
Your Neighborhood Basic White Girl
