So, I got a little carried away with the the 30 day vegan challenge and have just decided to go vegan for hopefully the rest of my life. What made the difference for me was the video “101 Reasons To Go Vegan” by James Wildman. I even dedicated an Instagram account to the many food adventures I’m about to have. It’s only been over a week, but if I’ve learned anything--it is that veganism really is an adventure.
Going out to eat with friends usually leaves me with little options. Almost everything served at most restaurants had meat in it. And if it didn’t, then it definitely has some form of dairy in it. Overall, eating at places has proved to be a challenge. Like when I went to go get breakfast with my friend Ari and all I could eat off the menu was oatmeal and bananas. I was a little heartbroken. And I’m not exactly mad, but I definitely think that I’ll be spending the next week or two exploring vegan restaurants around the city of Detroit and get back to you guys with some reviews because I still identify as a #foodie.
As for how I’ve been feeling, I’ve never felt better. I get to eat until I’m full and still have a ton of energy throughout the day? Oh, hell yeah. I’m into it. Not kidding, I used to think I had mild narcolepsy to the point where I used to be able to fall asleep anytime, anywhere if I really tried. But ever since switching over to a plant-based diet, I’m simply not as sleepy as I used to be. I have enough energy to wake up at 7 AM to help my parents make breakfast, walk the dog, go to the gym, run errands throughout the morning and afternoon, and do homework at the end of the day. The only possible negative thing I’ve noticed is that I tend to get hungry way more often, especially in the morning when eating fruit that is ripe and easily digestible. That stuff just goes through you.
Like I said before, the only real thing that I’ve been missing is cheese, but I’ve been trying my best to stay strong. I still cry a little bit when I see someone eating queso, but it’s fine. Everything is just a matter of getting used to and science says it takes about 21 days to form a habit. As long as I make it to that 21st day without caving into queso, I know I’ll be alright.
For anyone that thinks eating a plant-based diet is boring, I’d love to disagree. All food in the world was vegan until we started processing things we shouldn’t be. There is literally so many recipes and types of food that are vegan. For example, Mexican and Indian food are so easy to make vegan. The fajita tacos I made the other day would blow your mind. Also, spending time with yourself making the food that’s going to go into your body is very meditative. Being in tune with my body is something I’ve never been, but I’m glad I started listening now rather than later.
