I Broke Out Today

Hey guys! My name is Lyla. I am a two-year-old Hound mix, and I am a resident at Paws Humane. I've been in and out of the shelter since I was just a little baby.

I've been adopted out and returned multiple times, but I don't really know why. I have never done anything wrong at my homes before. I try to be on my very best behavior, so I can stay, but it never works.

Recently I've been a little sad since my most recent return, so I did something terrible today: I broke out of the shelter for the day. I called up my chauffeur who brought along her camera to document our adventures!

So first thing, I just had to go shopping! I live in the city Columbus, and the stores here welcome customers of all kinds. How cool is that? They welcomed me with open arms and let me look around. Although I didn't really find anything for me, it was really cool to be let in and do people things!

Once I was over shopping, I went down to this place my chauffeur called "The Island" or something of that nature. It was really cool because I got to watch people going down the white water rapids in these little boat things. I don't really know why someone would ever want to do something scary like that, but I really enjoyed watching it!

When I was leaving the island, I saw this really big tower. I had never seen anything like it before, so I asked if I could snap a picture with it! My driver told me it's something called a "water tower?" Apparently that big silver thing holds a ton of water! I sure would have loved to swim in that thing. It's the coolest pool ever!

OK, so don't tell anyone back at the shelter, but I may have snacked a little while I was out. I had these really delicious french fries. I promise I didn't have too many, just a few. But they were so worth it! Fantastic.

My driver went to the bathroom, and I saw these trees that were dressed up! I had to snap a quick selfie with them before she got back. I didn't want to tell her how excited I was because I thought it might be stupid. I just couldn't help it because it reminded me of being in a home. It reminded me what it was like to get presents from Santa. I know, it's a little dumb, but I was too happy to not take a selfie.

To finish off the day, I got one last snack: ice cream! I got a chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream cone from Bruster's. Man, it was so good! Why is this ice cream stuff only for people? I think someone should invent dog ice cream. It'll make a shelter dog's life so much better.

It was such a great day! Of course, I had to return to my great people at Paws because they are so good to me, but today was just what I needed.

I met some really cool new friends:

I even stopped to smell the roses! Or whatever kind of flowers these are.

I'm so happy I got out today, but after 254 days here, I am ready to find my forever home, not just another temporary home.

Thank you so much for reading Lyla's story. Unfortunately, she isn't the only one with a story like this. Next time you go looking for a new addition to your family, please consider adoption before buying from a breeder. There's plenty of beautiful dogs that need homes. These dogs are not broken, but were just dealt a bad hand of cards. Shelter dogs are the most loving ones there are.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
