Music has a unique way of reaching the depths of our souls and the corners of our hearts in a way that nothing else can. Whether it be a song that instantly sends chills throughout your body, a beat that makes you want to get up and dance, or lyrics that trigger emotions from a memory of the past, there is so much power in music. There is something so freeing about forgetting about everything else and letting music move in you.
As if I couldn't already be more in love with TCU, my all-time favorite band, NEEDTOBREATHE, came to play on campus at the BYX Island Party (BYX is the Christian Fraternity on campus). My love for this amazing, Christ-centered school was expedited. After waiting over an hour an a half to make sure that I was as close to the stage as possible, the president of BYX came out onto the stage to introduce the organization. Before the band came out to perform, he confidently shared The Word of God with the student body gathered in the commons. He spoke of the overwhelming love God lavishes on us and how nothing, no matter how big or small, could ever separate us from that love. I could feel the warmth and light of God being radiated off of not only the speaker, but everyone standing around me. I was immediately filled with joy and even more excitement to see my favorite band come on stage. I'm not talking normal excitement. I'm talking about the kind of excitement that involves singing at the top of my lungs to every song, jumping up and down, and flailing my arms..
You can probably imagine this excitement when NTB played one of my all time favorite songs, Lay 'Em Down. It's the one song that was in the back of my head, as I hoped that it would be played. This song is my happy song. It's the kind of song that can turn my day around immediately. When it comes on, I automatically turn the volume up and sing along to it, as loud and as obnoxiously as possible. Seeing the other students around me singing along with the song and putting their whole bodies into the music brought a smile to my face that I couldn't contain.
I started thinking about the message of the song and the beauty and truth of the lyrics. Just like the fulfilled feeling I got after listening to the BYX president speak of Gods unfathomable love, I was embraced by the comfort of The Lord's message in this beautiful song. "All you burdened and broken down, bring all of your troubles, come lay 'em down."
If you think about it, this single line is packed with so much meaning. It is so beautifully overwhelming to think about how much we are loved, cherished, and chosen for greatness by the Creator of the entire universe. Despite our brokenness, our Father has open arms for us and is waiting and willing for us to lay these burdens and struggles down at his feet. I used to have this idea that I had to be perfect and without sin to be "a good Christian," but in reality, The Lord wants you and loves you endlessly in all of your sin and brokenness. He is waiting to make something beautiful of the mess that we are, and all we need to do is surrender at the feet of Jesus.
