Breaking Through the Sorority Stereotype

Breaking Through the Sorority Stereotype

How many times have I heard the typical stereotypes for sorority women? The answer is one too many. The assumptions people have for how we act, dress, and are as individuals can sometimes create an inaccurate depiction of what sorority life is actually like. Despite there not being a specific "mold" or stereotype, I often feel like all I have to do is tell someone I'm in a sorority and it's like, *cue the eye rolls*.

Therefore, I have decided to compile a list of 20 things you probably didn't know about sorority women in hopes of justifying the inaccurate misconceptions people may have toward sorority life.

1. We're not as catty as sorority girls are portrayed as in the movies, like not even close.

2. We live, breath, and genuinely love our philanthropy.

3. Not all of us are obsessed with the Bachelor.

4. Only like 25% of the tweets from TSM are truly accurate. The rest just give sororities a bad name and rep.

5. We don't all love Starbucks. In fact, half of us don't even like coffee.

6. Some of us actually like sports. Crazy, right?

7. Not all of us use the term “bae" to describe every single thing we love.

8. We have friends outside of our own sorority.

9. We also have friends outside of the Greek system, and we are always open to meeting new people.

10. Yeah, Lily Pulitzer is cute, but not all of us are into floral.

11. Some of us actually have very difficult and time-consuming majors, so school really does come first.

12. And some of us are here on scholarships, not just our parents' money. We've worked hard to get to where we are today.

13. Glitter is great and so much fun to use, but it's annoying AF and it gets everywhere, so we secretly hate it most of the time.

14. Some of us don't even have a Pinterest account (guilty).

15. We truly do love each other as much as we talk about it on social media. Every sister is a favorite sister.

16. However, we don't always scream and hug each other whenever we run into each other in public, or ever, really.

17. We preach sisterhood during recruitment and how it's a huge value of ours, and we stand by that each and every day. We really would drop anything for anyone at any moment.

18. You may see us walking to campus in a wolf-pack-cult kind of way, but it's only because we're leaving from the same place and going to the same place. We are fully capable, and sometimes prefer, to walk places alone.

19. Half the reason we post those candid or strategically posed pictures on social media is because our grandmas beg us to.

20. We wear our letters all the time because we're proud of who we are, as individuals and as an organization, and we're d*mn proud of what we stand for.

The uplifting encouragement, love, and confidence that each one of my sisters has given me is exactly what makes this whole experience so incredible. The sisterhood in itself is why all sorority girls live the sorority life. It's magical and unexplainable.

I am so proud to be in a sorority, because when I look around the room, I see a vast, diverse group of women. Individually, we live very different lives, but as a group, we share the same core values, and that's what makes the sisterhood so great. There is no way for all of us to fit one mold. We've broken through the sorority stereotype.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
