My Breakup With Anxiety

No longer will I let this rule my head.

Dear Anxiety,

We've had our fun this past year. You constantly told me that I should panic about a paper that was two weeks away and that I had plenty of time for, or you tried to convince me that I would achieve nothing in my time at college. Thanks for that. But now that you've had your fun experimenting this past year, let's look towards the future, shall we?

You have controlled me for too long. I feel as though I can't accomplish anything because you're always throwing a new "What if?" into my head or helping me to relive the problems of my past. Next year, though, I am the one in charge. Gone are the days where you have a right to tell me that I'm going to fail my project because of one tiny mistake, or that if I don't study every single page, I'll fail my finals.

I'll admit, sometimes I feel more productive because of you. The stress of upcoming events motivated me late into the night. But then you use that in the future to remind me of the mistakes I made. Too many nights I've lost sleep because you told me to keep working, or because you reminded me of my failures. It's not fair that you use that as a weapon against me.

But from now on, I will set my own rules. I will love every project I do, even if it's not my best work. I will actually get some sleep and dream happy dreams on my own account. I will work hard without stressing out. I will study with a schedule that makes sense, so you can't come and attack me.

Speaking of, don't even think you have a chance with your anxiety attacks anymore. I've found ways to help save me. I can breathe, visualize and relax you away. I have the tools to stop you so I'm not shaking worse than a chihuahua or dealing with a never-ending headache. I will take my body back from you and be healthy by taking care of myself.

So here's to you, anxiety. This year was still fun, even if you made it hell sometimes. Don't expect me to take you back to school with me in the fall, though.

Sincerely,

The better me

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
