Hi there. Remember me? Your girlfriend?
I know it’s awful of me to say, but maybe you could get off your phone/PS3/PS4 for a few minutes and spend some quality time with me! It could be fun, who knows. We could actually go outside and see the world, go see that movie we’ve been talking about, or eat at the restaurant that we’ve been saying we’d go to so we could get a break from cafeteria food. No? You don’t hear me because you’re totally distracted and out of this world? Oh, okay. Let me just throw your phone/controller across the room.
Okay, so maybe it’s not that bad. But, I do have way too many internal conversations where something like this happens. Don’t get me wrong, I love my boyfriend and he doesn’t completely ignore my presence all the time. But what is it with guys and games? I mean they play games with girls, is that not enough?! I swear, most of the guys I know live off of their video games, like it gives them some kind of life force or something.
I get it, we’re only young once and after we graduate he won’t have enough time to play games constantly. But, we’re only young once. So shouldn’t we be out hiking or something? What if the world ends and the only thing we did all weekend was sit in a dorm room playing video games and doing homework? How sucky would that be to tell all your friends in the afterlife.
“What were you doing when the world exploded?”
“Oh, you know, watching my boyfriend play video games.”
I’m not saying I don’t like games myself. I was a huge fan of "Spyro the Dragon" when I was younger (I still have all of the games), but I don’t understand how they completely take over someone’s life. Seriously. As I type this, my boyfriend is playing FIFA. How many games of FIFA can you possibly play in one day? Apparently, between him and his friends, it’s like 40.
So, to all of you gamers out there with girlfriends, I challenge you to spend a whole day that doesn’t involve you being on your phone or on your console. You don’t have to watch a chick flick or anything, but go out and enjoy the day, enjoy each other. Don’t spend your days cooped up inside constantly. Don’t forget that she exists after hours of playing "Battlefield" or whatever you crazy kids play these days. Heck, if you really want to play, have her try it out with you. I know plenty of girls who like playing just as much as guys do. ("Assassins Creed" isn’t too shabby, guys).
Regardless of how much you play video games, just don’t forget your girl may be right there beside you. And maybe she’s been trying to talk to for the last ten minutes but you’re too zoned out. I don’t know, just a thought. But, we still love you, no matter how nerdy and annoying you are.
