There are just so many lovely books out there to read. But so many of them get passed over for the newest paranormal teen romance or YouTuber biography. Here are ten fantastic books that you should read right now.
"Fight Club"
Yes, it’s a book. And it’s awesome. Everyone has heard of the movie "Fight Club"and the classic phrase “the first rule about fight club is don’t talk about fight club.” But few people realize that it was a book first. And it’s a great book! Super exciting, fast-paced, a bit disturbing… it might just ruin your life. But it’ll ruin it in the best possible way!
"The White Devil"
Okay, so not a book but a play. This is a play by John Webster (who lived a few years after Shakespeare) about horrible people. A lot of people die. A lot of people kill other people. There’s a lot of Elizabethan style smack-talk. It’s great.
"Comes a Horseman"
This book is not for the faint of heart. It’s about a man who believes he’s the Anti-Christ and tries to bring the Apocalypse on by committing a series of murders. A bit grisly in a few places, namely the first chapter. But if you can get through the first chapter, you can get through the rest of it. It’s super exciting, super interesting, super thought-provoking and you should read it.
"The Things They Carried"
This book was written by a Vietnam veteran who tells a bunch of stories about his time in the war. And if you have read this book, you’ll see that that’s a really poor description because there’s so much more to it. The entire thing is just so profound and so beautiful and so sad and I need to stop or I’ll go on forever. I’ll just say that I had started keeping a quote book around the same time that I read this and the first 8 quotes are from this book.
"Measure for Measure"
Another play, sorry, but I read a lot of plays. Basically, it’s a Shakespeare play about pimps, prostitutes, and postulants and that’s all you really need to know about it.
"The Rover"
I promise, this is the last play. Also written about the same time as Shakespeare, this is a feminist play about women being in charge of their own sexuality. What is this heresy you speak of? Women as autonomous individuals? Yes, there were actually women in the 1600s who realized that other women care about who they have sex with! Except the whole point of the play is that the women don’t have a lot of autonomy. But all the same, it’s making the same argument. Also, it’s just super funny.
"Game of Thrones"
I’m sure you knew these were books first but I’m also sure that very few of you have actually read them. But you should because they’re great and they definitely stand up to the show. But you’ll also be a little bit crushed because you’ll realize that the sexy Jon Snow is 14 at the beginning of the book and then you’ll feel a bit like a pervert. Also Daenerys is 13, so there’s that. But all the same, you should read them and pretend like all your favorite characters are still alive.
Go forth and read!
