As a super fan of comedy and literature, nothing is more up my alley than a funny book. I decided to share some of my most precious, funniest gems with you all because as an annoying people pleaser, I want to give you the gift that is laughter. These books have cheered me up when I've been down, made me crack a smile when I needed it the most, and just reminded me that laughter is the best medicine (aside from that pink medicine that tastes like cotton candy you took when you were a kid. That shit tastes awesome).
1. "Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?" By Mindy Kaling
Notable quote: “Teenage girls, please don’t worry about being super popular in high school, or being the best actress in high school, or the best athlete. Not only do people not care about any of that the second you graduate, but when you get older, if you reference your successes in high school too much, it actually makes you look kind of pitiful, like some babbling old Tennessee Williams character with nothing else going on in her current life. What I’ve noticed is that almost no one who was a big star in high school is also big star later in life. For us overlooked kids, it’s so wonderfully fair.”
2. "Lets Explore Diabetes with Owls" by David Sedaris
Sedaris is my favorite non-fiction writer of all time for one simple reason: his humor. He is one of the biggest influences on my own writing, and I don't know if I would've found my literary voice if it weren't for him. Most of his stories aren't "laugh out loud" funny, but more subtle and more impactful. He is the perfect combo of funny and smart, and I want him to be my mentor. David, if you read this, I will drop my life and move to wherever you are (I'm sure its some quaint little village in England) and learn your ways so holler at a girl.
3. "Yes Please" by Amy Poehler
Amy Poehler is everything to me. She is fucking hysterical, smart, motivated (check out amysmartgirls.com), she seems like a fun person to be around, her and Tina are friendship goals, her hair is made of gold I believe, and I want to be her assistant so I have a legit reason to be around her all the time. Again, Amy, if you are reading this, I will drop my life and move to wherever you are and become your assistant, no questions asked. So of course with this in mind, I was ecstatic to read her book. Full of laughs but also lessons and wisdom, Amy is not only my imaginary best friend but also my imaginary cool aunt whom I go to for advice.
Notable quote: “Hopefully as you get older, you start to learn how to live with your demon. It’s hard at first. Some people give their demon so much room that there is no space in their head or bed for love. They feed their demon and it gets really strong and then it makes them stay in abusive relationships or starve their beautiful bodies. But sometimes, you get a little older and get a little bored of the demon. Through good therapy and friends and self-love you can practice treating the demon like a hacky, annoying cousin. Maybe a day even comes when you are getting dressed for a fancy event and it whispers, “You aren’t pretty,” and you go, “I know, I know, now let me find my earrings.” Sometimes you say, “Demon, I promise you I will let you remind me of my ugliness, but right now I am having hot sex so I will check in later." Creativity is connected to your passion, that light inside you that drives you. That joy that comes when you do something you love. That is the juicy stuff that lubricates our lives and helps us feel less alone in the world. Your creativity is not a bad boyfriend. It is a really warm older Hispanic lady who has a beautiful laugh and loves to hug."4. "Bossy Pants" by Tina Fey
I'm sure by now you saw this coming. What I love most about Tina is that she completely understands me. Tina might be God, I'm not 100% sure yet. She knows the type of person I was growing up, and she knows the person I am now. I can't say enough good things about Fey. She is a boss ass bitch in the best way possible, and, in the words of The Police, every little thing she does is magic. Tina is the person I aspire to be, even though their can clearly only be one. Tina is a funny, inspiring, silver lining in this concrete bunghole of a world. She is perfect. I love you Tina. Call me.
Notable quotes: "It will never be perfect but perfect is overrated. Perfect is boring."
"If you retain nothing else, always remember the most important rule of beauty which is: who cares?"
"You can tell how smart people are by what they laugh at."
"Don't waste your energy trying to change opinions. Do your thing and don't care if they like it."
5. "Damned" by Chuck Palahniuk
I decided to throw a fiction book into the mix after realizing all of my picks were non-fiction. I love fiction (which is a dumb statement, but get over it), but I tend to gravitate towards funny non-fiction. They say the funniest things in life are funny because they're real, but of course I had to add one of the funniest books that probably exists ever (no exaggeration).
Palahniuk is known for "Fight Club," in that whenever I tell people he is one of my favorite authors, some people don't know who I am talking about until I mention the famous title. Satire is like porn for me, so that makes Palahniuk one of the best pornstars of all time (I say this with genuine admiration). His stories are twisted, dark, shocking, and they make my LOL (which I'm sure several train goers can vouch for). His books go there, wherever there is. I mean this story literally takes place in Hell. No topic is too risky for him and I love that. If Hell is real, I can't wait to meet him there.
Notable quotes: “What makes earth feel like hell is our expectation that it should feel like heaven.”
“Actually, watching television and surfing the Internet are really excellent practice for being dead.”
“The paradox: Is God a racist, homophobic, anti- Semitic ass? Or is God testing to see if I am?”
