Bohemian Rhapsody Is A Must-See Movie

This fall saw many new movies coming to the theaters but one that stood out to me was 'Bohemian Rhapsody'. The film takes you on the journey of the British rock band Queen but also gives the audience a look into the world of the band's lead singer, Freddie Mercury. The film opens up with one of their most famous performances during the 1985 Live Aid benefit concert. It then cuts to Freddie Mercury in the early 1970s while he was in college. Another scene shows him listening to his future bandmates, Brian May and Roger Taylor, in their band Smile. While at this concert he meets his first love, Mary Austin. This scene sets up the film for the wild ride that was Queen.

The film takes you through their early days where they were struggling to be heard. Once they get a record deal, they take time to their songs, one of the most famous being none other than 'Bohemian Rhapsody'. In the film, it shows their making of that song in particular including the many takes of Roger singing, "Galileo" over and over. With Freddie Mercury being the lead singer, he uses the stage, his clothing, and his outgoing personality to put on a show and be in the moment with his band and the crowd every time they perform. However, the attention he was getting would put a strain on bandmates relationships and his relationship with Mary. Along on the way, it shows Freddie's discovering his sexuality and some of the decisions he had to make because of it.

Many of their songs are used throughout the movie including "Don't Stop Me Now", "Killer Queen", "You're My Best Friend", "Somebody to Love", "We Will Rock You", "We Are the Champions", and many others. The film goes through some of the songs backgrounds and the changing times and the changing band members. Towards the end of the film, it shows Mercury's relationship with Jim Hutton, the 1985 Live Aid concert and he reveals his diagnosis of AIDS.

While the movie is a celebration and the story of Queen, it is also a celebration of Freddie and his life. The movie was recently awarded two Golden Globe Awards of Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama for Rami Malek's portrayal of Mercury and for Best Motion Picture Drama. This film deserves these awards for giving the audience a look into what it was like to be in Queen and to be around Freddie. The film did an excellent job of keeping its authenticity due to the help of band members Brian May and Roger Taylor.

I loved the film. I loved the way it was filmed, the actors and their portrayals, the costumes, the storylines, everything. I appreciated the time and dedication and attention to detail that was taken into every aspect of this film. For someone like me who only knew some of Queen's songs, it was an amazing way to understand the story. I saw this film with two of my friends and while we were sitting in the theater watching this story, every now and then a new song would be performed and one of us would say, "Oh I didn't know that was a Queen song." Queen's songs are all very different from each other and certain ones we just did not know it was theirs. It was a way for me to hear more of their songs, their lyrics and to know the backstories of some of their masterpieces. Their music captivated audiences before, now their story is captivating them again.

If you love Freddie Mercury or Queen or just want to see a really good biopic, you need to see this movie.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
