There are not too many well-known birds, maybe Tweety Bird and Big Bird, but now Birdie Sanders can be added to the list. Bernie Sanders, a democratic candidate for president, has been campaigning all over the United States of America in the past couple months. There have been shining moments in each tour stop but I don't think anything can be as unplanned and amazing as Birdie. On March 25th, 2016, Bernie Sanders was making a speech in Portland, Oregon when a small bird landed on his podium.
The crowd goes wild and Bernie himself throws his arms up in the air surprised. Sanders had just been speaking of environmental issues and many took this as a sign from Nature itself that Bernie was the right choice for president. I mean we all remember when Donald Trump was asked to do a photoshoot with a bald eagle.
People latched onto his bird and he got a personality. Not too long after it started trending on twitter, Birdie began tweeting. Birdie began campaigning and talking about the issues important to him. He even got a reworking of Bernie's poster to share around.
Bernie's following consists of a large population of young adults, most of whom are on social media. Many of these people jumped at the opportunity and into photo-editing software to create images involving Bernie and his bird counterpart. Princess comparisons were made over and over again. The younger generation were not the only ones to fall in love with Birdie. Stephen Colbert actually got Birdie onto his show to talk about his appearance at Bernie's speech in Portland. Colbert introduced Birdie by joking, “What are the odds that a bird would be attracted to an old man who looks like he has bread in his pockets?” Birdie had some interesting things to say on Colbert's show including his interest in America's vanishing middle class. At the end of Birdie's segment Colbert asked if Birdie was voting for Sanders and Birdie's response surprised the viewers. Birdie responded, “My heart is with Bernie, but I’m voting for Trump." Why Trump you may ask? Well his answer was, “My whole family could nest in his hair.”In an election full of arguments and high-emotions, a moment like this really helps everyone take a break from the politics and have a little laugh. Sure, in the end it all comes down to the candidate's issues and opinions but an endorsement from nature does not really hurt. But if you are a fan of both Bernie and Birdie's you can donate to the Sanders campaign and receive a Birdie sticker for a limited time. And remember to vote in your primary because every vote counts even if you decide to vote for a bird.
