Big Little Week As Told By Your Little

The week littles across every college campus have been waiting for. After weeks of anticipation, meeting older sisters, and plotting out who we want to be able to call “our person,” the time has finally come. There is no greater feeling than being showered with gifts and hand-me-downs for three days until you receive the greatest gift of all: a lifelong friend. Thank you for the hours spent crafting for me, using a full roll of “super duty” duct tape to get everything to stay in place just right, and perfecting every last detail each day to make this week the most special week of my college career. I can only hope to be half of the big to my little as you have shown me to be.

Day 1: Door Day

As we walk to our apartments and dorms full of anticipation, one question is replaying in our heads: “Who could it possibly be?” The minute the sight of our door catches our eye, every realm of our social media begins to blow up. Who knew that someone could make a door look so magical? It goes unsaid that door day is the perfect way to excite littles for what is to come. Just a first taste of the style and approach our bigs are taking for this magical week.

Day 2: Basket Day

We have never loved a basket so much in our lives. Baskets from your big blow baskets from the easter bunny out of the water. She knows your likes, dislikes, and everything in between and assembles your gift together as if angels crafted it. We remain grateful for all of your efforts and manage to fall even more in love than the night before. We are once more reassured that you are exactly what we have been looking for.

Day 3: Room Day

It would be a lie to say that this is not the most exciting moment of your college career (aside from graduation). We know that the minute that our door opens, what stands on the other side is pure bliss. Sparkles, confetti, and everything else girly fills the room. There is not one inch that was neglected to be decorated. Our bigs are superwomen. Whoever has the ability to decorate an entire room to make it look so beautiful, welcoming, and fit to you personally should be given an award… or twelve. She leaves an accessory with a note saying how she can’t wait to meet you tomorrow. Though I cannot speak for all littles, I know that I deeply considered sleeping on the couch that night so that I wouldn’t have to take down a single decoration.

Day 4: Reveal

Today is the day that we have all been waiting for. Our hearts are full of appreciation. We are a little nervous but ready to finally to be reunited with the mystery sister. The minute reveal begins, the room is full of hugs and tears. We have found home. Thank you for going out of your way the past week to make us feel like we truly belong. We are beyond lucky to have someone to serve as our sister, role model, and best friend. To know that we chose you and you chose us out of a large group says a lot, and the odds speak for themselves.

Though sororities’ traditions for big little heavily rely on the university, one aspect remains the same: it is the best reminder for why we joined. To know that behind all of the gifts, crafts, candy, and clothing items that someone put in so much time and effort for you is truly heartwarming. There is no way to repay her for her consideration and love that she has given you before you are even aware that it is her doing all of these things. You make us want to go out this minute and begin preparing for our littles next year. Thank you once more. Here is to the best years of our lives and many years of friendship after.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
