It is that time of year again when the leafs begin to fall, nights get crisper, and snow begins to come on your radar. IT'S THE HOLIDAYS. Now it is clear to see why Christmas is among the most popular holiday, I mean it is Christmas. It is often the biggest and longest celebration stretching from the middle of December to the middle of January, but what happens when your family is more of a Thanksgiving family opposed to Christmas. Now do not get me wrong I love Christmas as much as the next person, but the way I was raised Thanksgiving is not just a meal, it is a choreographed dance. When it is the only time of the year a family of this size can get together it is no wonder why it is the most important.
1. Phew...we made the cut.
Planning for Thanksgiving pretty much begins Jan. 2, of the New Year. It needs to be established where it will take place, who is bringing what, and more importantly who is bring who and how many extras. What better way to do that then to get a lovely fall themed invitation to Thanksgiving dinner...not going to lie, I was a little surprised at first but the invitation was pretty.
2. Fifty-five people is not all that many.
OK I may be lying a little -- 55 people is an insane amount of people to have under one roof for a very large meal who are all extremely hungry. I now see why the need for the invitation was so important...you cannot run out of the good stuff.
3. Which table are you at?
Unless you are King Arthur and have a table big enough to fit all of the knights, there is no way in the world that all of you can sit at one table. So at this point methodically placing the tables through out the house is a must, finding the people you are sitting with while shoving your face with food, well that is a game.
4. "Bar is in the den."
There is no "wine is in the freezer, beer is in the fridge" when a family of this size gets together, the bar needs its own room.
5. We often pick up a straggler.
College students, foreign exchange students, girlfriends, boyfriends, you name it, not everyone one can travel home for such a short amount of time, but hey bring them along, what is one more mouth to feed.
6. WHAT? WHAT? I can't hear you!
With 55 people you think it is going to be quiet? Might as well bring out a megaphone if you want to be heard, and even that is a stretch.
7. Somehow, someway we all manage to act like no time has passed.
Although we are a crazy bunch of loud individuals I would not trade my gigantic Thanksgiving for the world.
