Anybody that knows me really well knows that sometimes (most times) I don't have a filter. I get it from my mother. Just kidding, Mom (sort of). Not only do I not have control of my facial reactions, but as Cady Heron so aptly put it, I have word vomit. When people ask stupid questions and openly put their ignorance out there for the whole world to see, I can't help my response. When somebody is unnecessarily rude, my mouth just decides that they need to be put in their place.
But because God blessed me with smart parents that did their best not to raise ignorant children, sometimes I know when to shut up. Some things just shouldn't be said out loud or even thought in the first place. Malice comes from the heart. So whatever is coming out of your mouth is coming from your head and subsequently your heart. If you're like me and need a little help reigning in that little devil on your shoulder removing your filter, here are some Bible verses to keep you on track.
Psalm 39:1
I said, "I will watch my ways and keep my tongue from sin; I will put a muzzle on my mouth as long as the wicked are in my presence."
Proverbs 10:19
"When words are many, sin is not absent, but he who holds his tongue is wise."
Matthew 15:11
"What goes into a man's mouth does not make him 'unclean,' but what comes out of his mouth, that is what makes him 'unclean.'"
James 3:9-10
With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God's likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be.
