Being a young adult in our fast-paced, materialistic society can be extremely challenging. It's no easy task to keep up with the latest technology, handle all different types of relationships, and figure out who we truly are. But in my opinion, this is the best time to explore ourselves in order to become who we want to be. Every single day I set goals and try to make myself a better person; the best person I can be. Here are a few things I've learned that I think we should all keep in mind when it comes to figuring out who we want to be.
Know your limits. There will be times when you have way too much on your plate and you are extremely overwhelmed. Don't ever be afraid to ask for help. Also, don't be afraid to say no sometimes.
Go out of your way for people. People will appreciate the things you do for them and hopefully return the favor. Be known as the person who is willing to go the extra mile and be generous.
Don't let anyone take advantage of you. Know when to stand up and advocate for yourself. Being assertive and demanding respect is not something you should apologize for.
Work hard. Put effort into everything you do from college classes to maintaining relationships. It will pay off. Even if you are struggling, push through and keep working at it. This is a quality that will get you far in life.
Stay humble. Never let your ego get too big. There's nothing more distasteful than someone who thinks too highly of themselves. Being confident and being cocky are two totally different things.
Prioritize. Spend time doing what you love with the people you love. Don't let petty problems and materialistic things get in the way of what's truly important in life. Remember that "the best things in life are free."
Be accepting, genuine, and loving. These are qualities that will make you stand out. People will automatically be drawn to you if they know you're kindhearted and choose to see the best in people. Being rude or judgmental doesn't benefit anyone, including you.
It's easy to make simple changes in your life to become a better person. My best piece of advice is to not get caught up in all of the unimportant things but, instead, to recognize what truly matters to you.
