The Best Things About Having A Little

I have the best littles a girl could ask for.

The Best Things About Having A Little
Shelby Marthaller

I joined a sorority my freshman year of college. I was excited for everything Greek life had to offer: promised sisterhood, philanthropic events, leadership opportunities, holiday celebrations, reasons to craft, adorable clothes, and a beautiful house I can call my own.

But, the most rewarding thing I have gotten out of being in Kappa Alpha Theta is the friendships I have made, especially the relationships I have with my "littles". I was lucky enough to gain not one little, but two beautiful "twins" into my life.

Here are the top 10 reasons being a big is the most amazing part of being in a sorority.

1. Meeting them changes your life.

I met my little, Emily, during Bid Day dancing together. That was the night I realized this girl was awesome and I wanted to get to know her better. I didn't meet my other little, Sierra, until Big/Little reveal. But the first time I saw her I knew she would become an important person in my life.

2. From the minute you become their big, you know these girls were meant to be your friends.

Big/Little Reveal is the best memory I have from being in Theta. I remember spending hours on their gifts to welcome them into my family and being super excited to tell them I am their big sister. The smiles on their faces when the curtain dropped proved just how amazing these two are.

3. Your little is someone you can always call for a lunch date or girls night.

I can't count all the times I called up my littles to get some coffee or lunch just to catch up. Also, the nights spent with them have been some of my favorite in college.

4. You will always have someone to go with you to all Greek Life events.

I will never again go to any event with the fear that I won't know anyone there. I've had them accompanying me at every formal, spring pinning and philanthropy. Also, nothing beats introducing them as "your perfect little".

5. Your little will support you no matter what and love you despite your mistakes.

College is a time where you are learning and growing constantly. It is difficult to avoid making mistakes here and there. Through it all, my little send me supportive texts and make sure I know I am loved.

6. You get to give them cute gifts and they give you some back in return.

I've always been bad at arts and crafts but I love doing them. I have given my littles some pretty funny looking gifts but I know they love it no matter what. In return, I have received some of the cutest gifts that I know come from the heart.

7. Ever in need of an adventure buddy? Your littles are the perfect person to bring.

Whether it's a trip to the beach, waterfall, or just down the street to the cute coffee shop, every moment with them is an adventure.

8. Nothing beats the typical "I have twin littles" sorority pose.

9. Watching them succeed makes you feel like a proud parent.

In the year that I have known my littles, they have accomplished so much with their amazing GPA's, involvement on campus, and the awesome internships they have received. I can't even begin to explain how proud I am of them and all their achievements.

10. You know they will always love you even when you annoy them.

I know I can be a lot to handle sometimes. But, my littles have always loved and respected me even when I'm being a bit strange.

Bigs and littles have a special bond that most people don't understand. There isn't a single thing I would trade for the relationships I have with these two perfect human beings.

Being a big sister is the best blessing I have received being a Kappa Alpha Theta.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
