A lot of people seem to be afraid of being single these days. A boyfriend or girlfriend should not be one's security blanket. Couples are always together or texting or calling one another. There seems there is no time to actually be alone when you are in a relationship.
Don't get me wrong. We have all been there before—when you are just infatuated with another human being and you feel like you could never get sick of them. But everyone needs some "me" time in order to be a healthy person. That's why being single in college is the best. You get all the "me" time you need, and you also have your friends to spend time with.
College is the perfect time to find yourself. This is the time when you can discover interests and passions you never thought you'd have. You can explore and get out of your comfort zone. You can meet new people who might bring out sides of you that you never knew you had.
By being single during this whole process, you get a chance to know yourself on a whole new level. It is almost impossible to do so when you have someone else trying to get to know every inch of you at the same time.
Most of this discovery and self-contemplation happens during times of solitude. Times of solitude are rare when you have someone texting you constantly, wanting to know when they can see you next.
The people that are the best to have around when you aren't in need of alone time are your friends. Friends are different in how they affect your self-discovery. Friends help you change and become what you want. They help you to see yourself in a more honest light. Plus, friends tend to be a bit more understanding of the need for alone time.
I'm not saying you should never date in college. Just keep in mind that this is the time in your life to be free to do as you please and learn who you are. Find the people you are meant to be lifelong friends with. Focus on yourself and your needs. Achieve what you never dreamed of achieving. Become the person you always wanted to be. Now is the time.
