Everyone goes on a vacation at some point in their lives. My family has never been big into spending a ton of money on vacations so we never went to Disney World, or anything like that. We would pack into the mini-van, later on the Tahoe, and drive 10+ hours to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan where my mom’s side of the family lives. The U.P. is full of amazing places to visit. Here is a list of my favorite places.
1. Mackinac Island
An island where motorized vehicles are prohibited. Horses and bikes are everywhere plus pedestrians walking. Caves, rocks, and walking trails fill the island. As well as, stores full of clothes, fudge, ice cream, and all kinds of souvenirs.
2. The Soo Locks
Who doesn’t love seeing a huge ship pull into a small metal cage and then be raised or lowered to lake level? Plus you can see Canada from there and who doesn’t like looking at Canada?
3. Oswald’s Bear Ranch
They have a bunch of rescued bears that they are rehabilitating and then sending back into the wild. How cool is that? You can also purchase apples from the ranch and feed them to the bears and they know when you have apples because they will sit up all cute.
4.Tahquamenon Falls
There is a lot walking to actually the see the falls and a lot of steps to get close to them. However it is worth the walking and the steps. I’ve never been to the lower falls but the upper falls are amazing!
5. Any of the lakes
The U.P. is surrounded by huge lakes and has many little lakes inside of it. Most of them are sandy bottoms and so clear you can see the bottom. Having a beach day and hanging out by the water is the perfect vacation.
Bonus:
6. Pictured rocks
I’m calling this a bonus because I haven’t actually been there but I have heard amazing things. And they were featured in a Kid Rock video so that makes them pretty cool.
If you are looking for a vacation spot that has clear, amazing lakes, wonderful fudge, and extremely tall trees then the U.P. of Michigan is the place to be. I know I will be vacationing there the rest of my life.
