“I do not take tonight for granted” Leonardo DiCaprio said.
These are the words that will be ringing in all of our heads for the rest of the week after we watched Leo triumphantly take hold of his first Oscar, after 25 years of acting. The win didn’t come as a shock, after all, the hype for “The Revenant” in the past few months, but was one of the many celebratory wins at the film industry’s biggest night of the year. All the celebrities came clad in jewels and sporting their fanciest tuxedos for the 88th Annual Academy Awards. Host, Chris Rock went to poking fun at the racial tension leading up to the night, keeping the evening light-hearted and fun. The audience was surprised with “animated” presenters and powerful performances from Hollywood’s hottest stars. We saw many rookies leave excitedly with golden statues and saw history unfold as the country of Chile was awarded their first Oscar. The Los Angeles Girl Scout Troup raised over $65,000 selling cookies to the prestigious crowd, while the night’s youngest member, Jacob Tremblay of “Room” charmed had every woman across the country saying “ah.” Here are the best moments of the 88th Annual Academy Awards.
Chris Rock’s #OscarsSoWhite Monologue
When the Oscar nominations were released back in January, America was quickly faced with the looming fact that no black actors had been nominated for their work in the film industry…again. Rock directly addressed all the backlash came with the nomination list in his opening monologue saying,
“I’m here at the Academy Awards, otherwise known as the White People’s Choice Awards.”
He went there and absolutely killed it. He had the entire audience laughing throughout the show with each and every dig at the #OscarsSoWhite controversy. Something that shouldn’t have been ignored and Rock handled it with grace and what he does best, humor.
“Spotlight” Wins Biggest Award of the Night
The biggest surprise of the night even threw presenter, Morgan Freeman off his game. The actor had a shocked look on his face as he opened the winning envelope and didn’t see statue sweeper films of the night, “Mad Max Fury” or “The Revenant,” but the hard-hitting “Spotlight.” The win stunned so many in the audience after it had only won one other award that night. The film featured the true story of The Boston Globe’s investigation of all the sexual abuse carried out by Catholic priests. Overshadowed by the night’s winning films, “Spotlight” deserved the Oscar just as much as any of its competition in the “Best Picture”
Leo Finally Wins
Cue the tears from every girl around the country, because Leo is finally an Oscar-winning actor. After being nominated five times previously, the award was one of the most anticipated of the evening and the result did not disappoint. All the competing actors graciously started his standing applause as DiCaprio took the stage to deliver a speech that left fellow actor, Kate Winslet with tear-clad eyes. While he could have taken the time to focus on his journey up until that special moment, DiCaprio’s speech mostly focused on climate change and how important it is for society to recognize the problems arising around us. So humble Leo, happy to know that fifth times’ the charm for you.
Lady Gaga Speaks Out Against Sexual Assault
Leonardo wasn’t the only one bringing current social issues up at Hollywood’s biggest night, Lady Gaga performed a powerful number speaking out against sexual abuse in America. Joe Biden presented the star before she took the stage in all white, alone under a spotlight. She flawlessly delivered her moving ballad “Til It Happens To You” that she co-wrote for the Oscar-nominated documentary film, “The Hunting Ground.” Near the end of the performance, Gaga was joined on stage by a group of sexual assault survivors who had heartbreaking messages written on their arms that read, “Not Your Fault” and “Unbreakable.” A survivor of sexual assault herself, Gaga had the audience on the verge of tears by the end of her performance.
“Mad Max: Fury Road” Sweeps Up Awards
Post-apocalyptic film “Mad Max: Fury Road” went home with six awards, the most of any film of the night. The film had been nominated for 10 awards. “Mad Max” dominated in all the detail-orientated awards of the night, including, Best Costume Design, Production Design, Makeup & Hairstyling, Film Editing and both Sound Mixing and Editing. The closest competitor for awards was “The Revenant” which only won three awards by the end of the night. The film shockingly and impressively shut out mega-hit “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”
C3PO, R2D2 and BB-8 Steal the Show
Audience members were in for a treat when “Star Wars” stars C-3PO, R2Ds and BB-8 graced the stage to honor composer, John Williams. The world’s favorite droids took over the Oscars when they took the stage to give honorable mention that Williams was nominated for this 50th Oscar that evening. The three robots wandered around on stage in search of their seats when they realized 3PO’s resemblance to the Oscar statuette.
“He has already won five Oscars for composing,” C-3PO said. “No wonder he has a good seat.”
Minions from animated film “Despicable Me” and Woody and Buzz from “Toy Story” also presented awards, adding to the light-hearted evening.
Black Actors, White Roles Montage
Just when you thought Chris Rock had the lack of diversity in Hollywood covered in his opening monologue, Rock and several other actors put together a hilarious montage that addressed how hard it is for black actors to get big roles in films. The bit featured Whoopi Goldberg, Leslie Jones and Tracy Morgan who acted out roles that were originally played by white actors in films including “Joy,” “The Revenant,” “The Danish Girl” and “The Martian.” Leslie Jones comically impersonated the bear that attacked Leonardo Decaprio in “The Revenant” that took the skit to a whole new level. Rock acted out Matt Damon’s role in “The Martian” where the NASA team decided it was too expensive to bring home a “black astronaut.”
