This past Tuesday was the Washington DC primary, the official end of the primaries in the presidential election cycle. To the surprise of very few, presumptive nominee and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton won the primary, clenching 16 delegates, while her rival Bernie Sanders won four delegates. Sanders reported last week that he would stay in the race until all of the American people were given the chance to vote, and at that point he would meet with Clinton to discuss how to work together to “make certain” Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee, is defeated. The primary has since passed and Sanders has met with Clinton. While he has met with her and has made plans to work together with her he has not officially endorsed her or dropped out of the race. Although it is evident that Clinton will be the democratic nominee, Sanders plans to stay in the race until the Democratic convention this July.
Sanders remains in the race technically, but his actions suggest he is in the process of ending his campaign, as there are reports of him possibly delivering a concession speech at the convention. But is that too late? Sanders ran a great campaign that showcased a more liberal branch of the Democratic Party, and forced the conversation of several issues such as the cost of education and corruption on Wall Street. Because of his large following it is important Clinton adopt some of Sanders positions to gain the support of his supporters. The longer he stays in the race, the shorter the time that Clinton has to win over his supporters. His current position is a bit contradictory as he is still technically a rival to Clinton but has agreed to work with her to defeat Donald Trump. Because of Sanders pledge to work with Clinton to defeat Trump, it is clear that Sanders does plan to leave the race. However, how he does so will clearly be on his own terms. So for now it appears that while Sanders is still in the race, he is on his way out and that perhaps even he has stopped “ Feeling theBern” and is about to say “I’m with Her.”
