Mother's Day 2016 is finally here and stores are starting their sales on flowers, cards and candies. Spouses and children alike stand in line ready to spend money on the most important females in their lives. Yes, the gifts are important, but what is a Mother's Day without the amazing mothers in our lives. Dear Supermom in my life, here are the 11 reasons why you are a phenomenal woman.
1. You chose to give birth to me.
You immigrated into the country leaving four children behind, so you can give yourself a better opportunity to a life that will allow you to provide properly for them. You did not have to bring another child into the world, yet you did, and even in the years where I was nothing but a pain in the ass, you never claimed to regret your decision.
2. You made sacrifices for all of us.
You moved to the United States because you knew life in Tobago would not be beneficial to my siblings. You worked as a nanny to a family that would help sponsor you and when the time came, you brought them all over. Even today, you continue to make sacrifices for us from providing us a home until we could get on our feet again and helping us pay for our education.
3. You are "always" right.
They are not kidding when they say that "Momma knows best." Every problem we had, you came up with the best advice. There were times where we barely followed what you said, but when we did, the outcomes were always for the best. Like you always say, "Take my stupid advice, I would never lead you astray."
4. You reminded us that no one is entitled to the love of another.
I remember the day I asked you the reason for your love for me and you responded by saying that even though you are my mother, you don't have to love me. I trusted you more because you were so honest about the way you felt and it made me realize that I should not expect love, I should just accept that I am loved.
5. You are hilarious.
The amount of times I laughed within a few minutes of sitting down and talking with you, I should be a healthier person. I got my crude sense of humor from you and that is a side of me I would never be ashamed of.
6. When the world is falling apart, you always seem to find peace.
I am not saying that inside you aren't panicking when things go awry; what I am saying is that you are a rational thinker and you are like a solid rock in the times of trouble. You helped me calm down and taught me not to fret so much over the petty stuff in life.
7. You are a hard worker.
I already knew that you work hard and give everything your all, but when countless people could say the same thing about you, it shows that this is a part of you that is essential to who you are. I wish you got more vacations and credit for it; employee of the month was a good title though.
8. You were one of my first teachers.
You taught me how to love myself, how to stay calm, and how not to sweat the small things in life and you continue to teach me how to be happy and at peace with myself.
9. You motivated me even before I had the strength to motivate myself.
I remember you sitting beside me and helping me with my schoolwork on the nights you had to work. You lost hours of sleep just so you can motivate me to be better than my circumstance. Eventually, I learned how to motivate myself and I have to give partial credit to you.
10. You are as mortal as everyone and everything else
This may sound depressing at first, but it's not. All it teaches me is that my Supermom would not be here forever. I cherish the moments we talk, walk together, watch television, and the rare times I allow you to do my hair. I am satisfied with living in the now because you are still here being you and I am still learning from you. I am lucky to have you in my adulthood especially with the fact that you lost your mother at the age of sixteen and she lost hers at the age of two. I value you and everything a lot more because I know everything good and bad will soon pass away.
11. You are my mom.
It would be wrong for me to not appreciate what I already have. You've been here with me ever since the day I was born and you are still here. I wish that I could provide you with all that you deserve instead of all that one could afford. Thank goodness I have a mom who is grateful for everything that she has been blessed with and I hope this digital footprint will be enough for you and will show my appreciation for you.
At the end of the day, all I want to say is:
