Over the course of my life, I have been to numerous large cities, the time spanning from a week to even a few hours. There is one thing for certain... I belong in the big city, and I bet many of you think that too. I am here to tell you why I think the way I do and if any of you out there have the same thinking that I do then maybe you belong in the city too.
The first thing I noticed after being in multiple cities is that every big city has its niche. Knowing and enjoying the niche are huge factors into going through with the decision to live in the city. Boston has its history, New York has its art/culture, and Los Angeles has its stardom. This is where you come to find what you love to see in the world. If you choose to be in the city then you need to be able to love what you see and feel inspired by what you see in it every day. I know it sounds obvious, but before you move out there you need to be able to the feel the environment and you will know instantaneously whether you belong there or not.
Another reason why you feel as though the big city is for you is because when you go back to wherever you are now you almost feel like a square trying to fit in the circle hole. Sure you can try to make it work, but in the end, you know you don't really fit. It is scary to think about but when I go to the city I feel as though I belong. The fast paced, never sleeping, opportunistic, world is out there and I know I have to go out and see what it has in store for me. If you feel the same way then my advice to you is to just go out there and show them what you are capable of doing. Don't get me wrong I am extremely nervous for when the time arrives, but when it does arrive I will make sure I'm ready.
As I live out my twenties I want to be able to experience everything that I can. That means that during this in-between stage of life (The stage I refer to right when you start your career but before you get married) I would not mind living in the city and walk to my job every day. I wouldn't mind walking past the good and the grim because now is the time in my life where I can do what I want and where I want to do it before I settle down and have kids.
You definitely need to have a feel for the city and you need to make sure that whatever the city has to offer is what you are willing to receive. The city speaks to people, and if you are persuaded by its beautiful attributes such as its niche and its architecture than the city is most certainly for you. On the other hand, if you can only see the garbage on the streets and have the anxiety that someone is going to steal from you then maybe the city isn't your thing. There is no right or wrong way to live your life. For me and whoever else can relate, though, the city is our next step in our lives.
